Everything hurts

Posted by Maxime on August 23, 2010, at 17:13:24

Is it normal to have your body ache from depression? That is how I am most days. My back hurts, my arms hurt ... everything is an effort to work through the pain, Is this part of depression, or am I really losing my mind? I feel worse than if I had a flu. Sometimes I feel better as the day goes on, and others not at all.

Maxime, have you been tested for chronic fatigue and other similar ailments? I hope you feel better soon. W

I didn't that there were tests for CFS. I always thought that most doctors don't believe in it. Would I ask my GP or my psychiatrist?

It is recognized in the USA . I don't know how they test. But if you have thyroid problems it's very common. Also what kind of pain as also could be arthritis starts early. Do A Google search . Phillipa ps my Son was diagnosed with it and fibromyalgia from the toxins in Desert Storm. The government here recognizes it

Phillipa
I did some searching of symptoms, and it does sound like me. I don't think I have fibromyalgia. I am scared to go to the doctor because I am scared that they will say that I am lazy. I am so tired that even my eyes are burning and have barely used the computer at all today because I was in bed until 5 pm.

I think when you're really down and out, aches and pains that you might have ignored become magnified because there's no joy or good feeling to buffer them. Hang in there. I have felt like giving up many times and, in retrospect, I'm glad I didn't.

Activity helps and therapy helps even when drugs don't work so well.

I was scheduled to work. I don't think it is stress because I have had it for over a year now.

I am off to work now!

I have pains as well that can appear in my finger and elbow joints which I think are related to depression, but this sounds bad, maybe worth talking to your GP about.

Maxime;
how are you? Are you in the UK? I was checked for fibromyalgia and other things like that. For that she checked trigger points (you can find where they are online) and the same doc - can you get to a rheumatologist? They can rule out the autoimmune things for you. That will give you something at least - peace of mind!
I have been in chronic pain which is why I went to a rheumatologist, and have been in pain severe to moderate to much less every day since, so when I saw your post I wanted to write. My first gp told me - oh it's in your head, and you're depressed and that's why you hurt! He was an a**. It took a very long time to find the right doctor, so after many general docs, and neurologists, mris, other things, i went to a rheumatologist. She looked for things the others didn't and found an increase in a level of something likely changed because of my fertility treatments. Therefore, maybe related to hormones, then maybe an endocrinologist could help you too. I just want to suggest something. Depression is bad enough, don't let the docs make you feel worse by saying you're lazy or whatever. Find a good doc (just asking where you are because of insurance, and I used to live in the UK but am now in Boston) and let them help you. I cried to my doc recently saying, I don't remember what it's like to not wake up in pain, what is it like for people who won't wake up in pain every day? I took it for granted! So I'm off to a pain clinic tomorrow. I had to push for things. Push for yourself, you deserve it! Good luck to you!!!

Thank you. I'm in Canada actually. I think I will make an appt. with my GP and take it from there. I also have an endo because I have Hashimoto's Disease. I had my thyroid checked lately and all the levels are fine.

I've been spending so much time in bed because I can't get up because everything hurts so much. I really don't need this on top of my depression.

Thank you for your thoughtful post.

Thank you. I will get it checked out even though I know they will say it's related to the depression. And maybe it is, but I've never had it before and I have been battling depression for years and years now.

Get your GP to do a broad test. You're right there is no test for CFS, but there is for things like Epstein Barr Virus, Gullion Barre Syndrome, Glandular Fever (mono for you guys) and other assorted nasties.

It can't hurt. Your GP will inform your pdoc if it's important to any psych conditions.

Depression can cause physical simptoms too. When I was depressed about losing my freind, I got all kinds of pain. It didn't go away till I went on zyprexa. I would sit in pain in the kitchen and hurt all over.

This is unhealthy also, physicaly.

Maxime, did you ever try Savella? Not sure if they have it in Canada..but it's a medication for fibromyalgia that is often prescribed off label for depression. It's known to provide pain relief.

Sorry about the other post i wrote about college-I initially thought you were in the US after you mentioned welfare.

Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Maxie, you could be stressed beyond your limits and then some. If you have pain, it's wise to have it checked out. CFS is arrived at by exclusion. All tests are most likely negative, and in the US there are certain other criteria. Depression and stress can wear some people out and create the environment for chronic illness. Pain is pain whether rooted in depression or not. Do you know a *good* doctor to consult? (As in understanding as well as knowledgeable.) Untreated chronic pain reinforces depression :(

No, they don't have Savella in Canada unless it goes by a different name and I can't find it.

No, I don't think you do.

By the way, you do have Abilify now in Canada, don't you? I think it was launched quite recently in Canada.

Yes, we have Abilify. But so many people on this site talk about the weight gain and I can't afford to gain anymore. I am supposed to be losing (not just what I want, but my endo and GP have told me so). Why does everything come with a side effect?

Weight gain didn't start until over 5mgs. 2.5mgs (I think that's what it was or maybe 2mg) had a powerful affect. Maybe low dose could be enough for you.

Hey Maxime, I get really bad pain from depression too but it's always a good idea to have some blood work done to rule out other factors. I get severe headaches and a sore neck, shoulders, back, etc...

It's just on a few occasions it actually hasn't been related to depression, seriously, ask your GP for a blood test. Get him to check everything. I hope you're feeling better soon.

Today is *really bad*. Especially in my back and legs. I haven't done any heavy lifting (I can barely get out of bed). It has reduced me to tears. I see my pdoc tomorrow and I will mention it. Although it's probably something that would be better address to my GP.

I do think you should see your GP. Could be related to thyroid.
