Fromage (REAL cheese) and MAOIs

Posted by proudfoot on August 27, 2010, at 20:01:34

I just this past week started Nardil and have been reading all I can find about the foods that are OK and not OK to consume. I'm feeling pretty confident about most things at this point, but need to throw a few food questions out there to those who've done this for a long time.

Bona fide Italian food lover here, so the realization of what I might potentially have to live without is sobering. Most specifically, I want to find out which cheeses are really OK despite what's written about "aged" cheeses. I've already decided that I can't live without fresh mozzarella, but from what I've read that's a safe bet anyway.

So some very specific cheese questions to throw out there for your experiences with them:

pesto sauce (contains parmesan cheese as well as pine nuts)?
shaved parmesan or romano cheese on salads?
any cheese other than mozzarella on a pizza?
packaged salad dressings (e.g. vinaigrettes) with grated romano or parmesan cheese in them?
caesar salads/caesar dressing?
cheesecake, or similar desserts with either ricotta or marscapone cheeses in them?
white sauces (e.g. alfredo)?
swiss cheese, especially if mild/pasteurized?
mild provolone cheese in sandwiches?

Thanks in advance for helping me understand how much of a dietary 'indiscretion' each of these might constitute.

Doug

I am not sure if I am a good example but I have no problem with eating cheese on 100 mg Parnate. I LOVE cheese. People will say that I am playing with fire because you never know when a hypertensive crisis will hit ... but I love cheese too much not to eat it. I've had hypertensive crisis from home made wine and I took 100 mg of Thorazine and I was fine.

I am sure that other people here will tell you otherwise. I like to live on the edge. I have a death wish anyway and if I die from cheese ... it makes a great eulogy for someone to make/write.

Maxime,

Your post made me chuckle because, while I can relate to having had a death wish at times in the past, dying from ingesting the wrong kind of cheese would be too ironic in my case, as I'm known in my family as the one who hated cheese from early childhood to my adult years.

I still can't stand most cheeses "raw" and by themselves, especially the smelly ones, but I've grown to love most cheese in many other foods over time and can't see living without them in my diet, thus my post here asking about eating cheese while on an MAOI.

But to have my gravestone state I died from eating cheese would be too funny in a macabre kind of way. Very Harold and Maude-esque...

I hope and pray that Monday brings more clarity and focus for you in your life journey.

Doug
