What the doc said...

Posted by SheilaC on August 18, 2010, at 18:22:12

Finally saw my doc today and told her that I had been feeling really flat and uninterested in anything the past week or so on Lithium (300mg). I thought maybe it was the Geodon and Lithium together, but she thinks since both are low doses they are probably ok.

She said it was ok for me to take 20mg of Adderall. I also told her how the old doc wanted me to take Seroquel at night and Geodon during the day and she said she wouldn't advise it because it is 2 drugs in the same class. She said use one or the other - not both. (Thank goodness! I was a zombie when I took both seroquel & geodon!) I told her I loved how seroquel helped me sleep, but it made me irritable the next day. She said most likely it was an antidepressant effect from the seroquel. She doesn't think I need an antidepressant - just a mood stabilizer.

So, for next 2 weeks (until I see her again) she wants me to take 60mg of Geodon with dinner, Ambien at night to sleep, 300mg Lithium and 10mg Adderall in morning and 10mg Adderall at lunch.

She said if I was still feeling flat we could taper down the Lithium in 2 weeks. But, maybe now that I am taking Adderall again I will be ok.

Does this sound like a lot of meds or is this ok because they are pretty much low doses?

300mg Lithum
10mg Adderall (2xday)
60mg Geodon
Ambien for sleep
Klonopin as needed

I think you should try to stop worrying; just give it the 2 weeks and see how you feel. If you're still feeling lousy, taper the lithium, just like your doc mentioned. Maybe this combo will be great for you, just as it is. Maybe it will require some calibration. Either way, it sounds like you're in good hands.

In terms of cleaning up your med cocktail, I would think that once your mood-stabilizer(s) are dosed correctly and you've made the final yes/no decision on the lithium, you'll probably need less ambien and klonopin. That's just been my experience...your experience may be entirely different.

I hope so. I'm not crazy about taking a sleeping pill every night in addition to my daily Geodon and Lithium.

I'm glad my doc wasn't crazy about 2 anti-psychotics. I was concerned about that with the last doc and he just blew me off and told me to take both.

I'm guessing a lot of folks take 2 meds to stabilize.

I just feel that they are such strong meds and with health concerns one is enough. Glad you doc agreed. Hoping you feel better today. Phillipa
