Starting Nardil

Posted by just lucky on August 10, 2010, at 18:29:01

Hello All,

I just started Nardil yesterday. I am taking 7.5 mg for a few days then going to 15 then to 30mg after 7 days. I have some questions on diet as this medicine scares me a bit. I have not responded to ssri's or snri's after years of treatment so this is the next step for me. Can I eat tuna fish, canned chicken, mayonnaise, tomato sauce? these are a few things that I would like to be able to eat but I could not find anything completely verifying safety. If anyone knows of a complete list of ok foods to eat I would be greatful.

I got a question for anyone taking Nardil.

Does Nardil make you gain weight, or does the foods you eat contribute to your weight gain?

Hi,
I've been on Nardil for over a decade. All of the foods you mentioned are fine. This is the list I use. This was written by a long term poster to this site, Elizabeth. This lady was a wealth of knowledge about treatment resistant depression. http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20010814/msgs/75408.html

You can eat all the foods you mentioned. What you're not supposed to eat are aged foods --aged cheeses (most cheeses) and aged meats like pepperoni and salami. Also fermented foods like soy sauce, tofu and sauerkraut. But how often, actually do you eat these foods?

I have found that I can eat small quantities of blue cheese, feta and cheddar in salads. I can also eat small amounts of pepperoni in pizzas.

Thes diet is fairly easy to follow. It doesn't require abstaining from common foods like tuna or canned chicken or mayonaisse. And small amounts of forbidden foods -- like taking some montery jack cubes at a function or party -- rarely have an effect.

When I started on parnate, I had been in the hospital and they were reluctant to start me on it, though my p-doc was insistent. Afterward, I said to him, well maybe they were concerned that I could eat some cheese and salami with a bottle of chianti and just check out. He told me these were tendencies, not certainties. If eating cheese or salami or drinking red wine would automatically put you in a hypertensive crisis, nobody would ever prescribe these drugs.
