For anyone interested, the two meditations are relieving maybe 80% of my pain. They also are reliving some of the remaining, usually intractable depression.
Indicated off-label for ocd, and I can understand why. My obsessive thinking is greatly attenuated.
I've been ill, and that had pulled me further back. What an awful summer this was looking like. After months and months, little light, a ittle headway. Wish me luck!

I've been wondering where you've been. You were sick? I'm so sorry. But the ultram is working?? That's great. I've looked for you. Love Phillipa

I looked that up and it seemed ultram (brand name) is the same drug as tramadol (generic name).

?
Great news! 80% is great! (I do hope you eventually get to 100%)

Hi Phillipa, the stuff is working better than expected-- it manages some pain, but not all, like really deep bone pain; nor does it stop pain 'events'. We're working with dose, ir vs. er. Much better for cognition and mood. I think in someone w/o pain issues it could prove a valuable psychiatric med. Nice to see you!

Hi Violette,
Thanks :)
The tramadol I have is mixed with tylenol (generic for ultracet). The ultram is a brand extended release tramadol hcl.
Seems to decrease obsessive thinking with little cognitive dulling.

I think when I tried ultram I took too high of a dose (actually a low dose to most other people) and I felt really bad. Anything acting on serotonin does that to me. But just one pill every now and then shows hints of goodness...which tells me it is probably an endogenous endorphin deficiency involved with me, not serotonin or NE or DA. And maybe why a single vicadin tab is about a 90% cure of 15 year depression in about 3 hours.
Tramadol is combination NE reuptake, 5ht reuptake, and weak opioid. Unique. At boards where people rate their meds, tramadol happens to score better than all other antidepressants, even though the people who scored it that way initially started it for pain instead of depression. The antidepressant magic of it was discovered by accident.
Tolerance is an issue that affects many, but they usually find a maintenance dose that keeps working or take weekend drug holidays. Unlike antidepressants, it works when you come back to it after having paused.
If you ever need to stop it, withdrawal is universally a nightmare with just about everyone.
If it improves life quality a great deal for you, then the risks are well worth it, IMO. Better to be addicted and well than unaddicted and walking dead.

Hi Bleuberry,
The addiction / tolerance issuse is a troubling one. I decided to shelve it for a bit, and I work closely with a pain management doctor and keep meticulous records. Basically, I do what I can on my end to guard against complications.
The mental benefits I expected and hoped for after reading on my own some months back. When I posted 80% effectiveness above, that was after a few good days. Then I had a few bad :) Your reasoning jibs with mine that tramadol is a weak opoid. It doesn't address a certain level or type of pain for me. And when I increase dosage during a pain episode, I suspect the ssri snri effects cause discomfort (generally feeling weird), and yet there is no additional pain relief.
Then there's norco which will deaden the pain...and everything else!
Yes, what the heck. Can tramadol withdrawal be so much worse that what I experience with effexor and pristiq? (Maybe....) For someone dealing with OCD and not pain, I think the right dose could be a godsend. Instead of rotating antidepressants and APs, a small opoid action seems easy and relatively safe.
