Which is the best sleep Medication?

Posted by Zandy on August 6, 2010, at 10:10:34

Thanks to all who helped me with the pain med!!!

I currently Take 2 mg Ativan plus 50 mg Promethazine and am barely able to sleep 7 hours. I've been on Ativan for several years and Promethazine about 4 months.

While weaning off the opioids (oxycodone, then asper your advice switched to Demerol and weaned off from there) I needed alot of Ativan and Promethazine to combat the withdrawal symptoms from the opiod. I would not have made it through without them as the nausea, anxiety, insomnia, and muscle cramping, twitching, and spasms were horrific during the withdrawal period. So I also took 1/4 of 25mg promethazine tablets 3-4 times during the day and 1/2 of 1mg Ativan 4 times a day in addition to the night time dosages fore mentioned.

I am now 2 days clean fron opiods and am starting to wean the daytime doses of Ativan and Promethazine.

My question/fear is that I am now "used to" the Ativan and Promethazine and will have to change my sleep medication. This is scarey for me as I have reactions to many many many medications.

My pdoc is thinking of switching me to an hypnotic sleep aid. Isn't Ativan an hypnotic?

I have tried Benadryl and Melatonin (several different brands) but they give me a hangover and I am sleepy the whole next day.

Also I cannot take anything that does anything to serontonin in the body.

Any ideas, experiences, warnings etc... would be greatly appreciated. You guys really helped my last dilema, I hope to hear from you all, it has been invaluable information for me.

Thanks!!!!!!

I've always used benzos but also took chloral hydrate in addition in a very bad insomnia phase. It worked well don't even know if it's used anymore. Have also taken lunesta with benzos. Some say restoril is a good sleep med. Phillipa

I find that the older anti psychotics work well for sleep. I am on Nozinan and it helps and I don't wake up hung over.
