I've now evolved into a long time SSRI user and getting to the point where I may try Parnate. I'd like to get that 'night and day' response that everyone talks about. How is this compared to an SSRI? For me, SSRIs blunt the anxiety and I can go out and work, although I never can be 'the rising star' at the work place where I'm in command of key executive decisions. With Pristiq, and this latest RIMA MAOI (Moclobermide) I just get all this agitation that I don't get with SSRIs. I hate agitation its the kind where I don't really want to do things with people or go in public places. Ihe problem with the irreversible MAOIS is that I am going to be 'out of commission' having to wait nearly weeks off meds and possibly weeks off again to go back to a med that works. My main diagonisis is anxiety with depression. Without treatment, It's in the moderate to severe category.

I used to have bizarre and extreme episodes of rage and was almost constantly irritable. In short, I was a real b***ch. SSRI's really helped with that irritability and anxiety I almost constantly felt. But then I got severely depressed and SSRIs or SNRIs didn't help at all. But parnate was like a miracle drug for me. Two days on it (after a 10 day washout of drugs that weren't really helping anyway) and I was a new person. The washout period is something you have to consider carefully -- if the old drugs aren't working, why worry about being off them for a couple of weeks? If they are still working, that's another story.

The problem is the withdrawel period makes it uncomfortable. Also since maios are old drugs should I assume that sexual dysfunction is just as bad ssri. I tried another old drug the tricyclics and was not impressed with or their side effects

I tried nardil mainly for social phobia.
it helped a little in that aspect, but not much.
but I did not feel like a drugged zombie like I did on ssris.
in fact, I had this low level background anxiety from the nardil. I was only on it a couple of months
no sexual side effects. And the food thing was a pain in the *ss, but I got more daring - I could eat pizza and some specific types of cheeses. But I did have a hypertensive scare with some vietnamese pho. but my doc gave me some nifedipine to suck on just for that eventuality.
real pity about the hypertensive stuff.

So anxiety is better controlled with SSRI"s and depression with MAOI's. Correct or wrong? Phillipa

Wrong. It is not possible to make such generalisations.

I agree with Ed here, while it is certainly possible that someone has better anxiolytic effects with an SSRI and better Depression lift from a MAOI, there are just far too paradoxical reactions from users to make that generalization. It's still up to debate on whether SSRIs are first line for anxiety, this may be buspar or xanax by some doctors.
