NARDIL Users - Weight Gain Question

Posted by angels78 on July 26, 2010, at 2:00:31

I recently went down from 75 mg of Nardil to 60 mg, I gained 40 lbs in 3 months! All in my belly! I do eat alot of fast foods though, but never had a problem gaining that much weight before.

I am beginning a 1000 calorie diet tomorrow, plus burning 300-350 calories on the tred mil every day, is it possible to lose my 'gut' from the nardil, or whatever i do, when i take nardil it'll be very hard to lose the weight?

Hi,
During my first several years with major atypical depression treated with high dosage Nardil, I gained over 100 pounds. Some was the atypical depression and some was the Nardil.

Years later I have lost half of the weight, but am still struggling to rid myself of the additional pounds. I believe that Nardil saved my life. It does cause some major weight gain issues along with the atypical depression that it is the best at treating. When the choice is weight gain or death, I chose the weight gain. Less of two evils. Nardil augmented with clonazepam is the only combination that has worked for me out of 45+ different combinations of antidepressants and augmenters.

It is much harder to control the weight at high dosage. I have been on dosages up to 120mg. I am currently at 60mg and all of the side effects, including weight gain, are much better.

I was able to lose 50+ lbs through strenuous exercise. Sometimes up to 2 hours per day. When the atypical depression had me bedridden, exercise was next to impossible.

Nardil, at high dosages, really seemed to make me crave the sweet carbohydrates. I believe there is something else going on with the medication that overrides the bodies ability to quit eating when full. I could eat way past the point of being full to almost misery. This is a serious medication, with serious side effects. But when no other medication works, sometimes Nardil will be the answer.

Be Well,
Jedi

Acetaminophen, ibuprofen and naproxen are fine as are most narcotic pain relievers. With the exception of meperidine(Demerol), Tramodol and any others that affect serotonin. All over the counter cold and cough medicines are NO-NOs, with the exception of straight guaifenesin. I've found that most of these over the counter meds are worthless anyway. I really don't miss them at all. I don't have a list, but I just throughly research any medication before taking with Nardil. This includes anything prescribed by doctors or recommended by pharmacists.

To use a MAOI, you just have to take your education to the next level. There are so many doctors, etc. that know nothing about these meds. What they don't know, can kill you! This is very rare, rare, rare. I will bet that almost all of the long term MAOI users on this board know 10 times more about their medication than 95% of the MDs out there. There is just not enough time for most MDs to become experts on the seldom used medications. They end up referring to the PDR, which we all know is often wrong when it comes to MAOIs. As users of these powerful drugs, we have to make up for that ourselves.
Be Well,
Jedi
