Stimulant dysphoria

Posted by jerryTRD on July 25, 2010, at 16:04:50

I had a horrible night last night and it's all because I took Adderall (generic) IR 20mg during the day. First of all when I took my normal dose I felt very uneasy, dysphoric, muscle stiffness, mind racing - not the normal boost in motivation and concentration I'm used to - and I've been on Adderall for 5 years. Then it just seemed to get worse at night when you'd think it would have worn off by then (I took my last dose around 3pm). My mind was racing I had hot and cold flashes, nervousness, I couldn't stop my tongue from moving around my mouth - I almost when to the ER I was so incredibly uncomfortable. I felt like maybe I was having some sort of toxic reaction? But I took some Seroquel and it "erased" everything and I was able to sleep.

So, I can't figure out why this is happening. Like I said I've been on it for 5 years. My other meds are Effexor XR, Klonopin, Ambien, Seroquel. I did take a 4 month hiatus from the Adderall - could that be it? I also noticed I got a different generic form from my pharmacy - not the kind I've been taking for the past 5 years. Could that be it? I'm in the dark. Adderall helps me a lot but now I'm afraid to take it.

thanks
Jerry

Hi Jerry,

It sounds like you've become 'sensitised' to amphetamine. Sensitisation may occur after long-term treatment with stimulants and represents an increased sensitivity to the undesirable effects of the drug. The best way to deal with this problem is probably to taper off the Adderall. After an stimulant-free period, you might be able to benefit from it again in future.

It could be, but it's not the most likely explanation IMO.

Did you check the tablets themselves to make sure they are the correct medication? Phillipa

I'd switch back to your regular brand without delay... Why did you change?

My insurance won't cover it.
