What helps stop stimulant tolerance?? SLS? Anyone?

Posted by jerrypharmstudent on July 21, 2010, at 16:22:15

I've been on Adderall for over 5 years and it's been my saving grace. Now all the sudden it's like I"m not taking it at all. I know there is a med out there that is supposedly supposed to help with tolerance and possibly reverse it but I can't find the posts. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks Jerry

Hi Jerry,

There's memantine (Namenda)? I don't think there's actually any clinical evidence that it works though. I think the claims of efficacy are based on assumptions - which are probably flawed. On the other hand, you might find a few reports from people who believe that it's helped.

Sorry not to be of more help.

Ed is that you?? Have you returned to the board??? GREAT! Yeah I'm now doing some searching regarding memantine and amphetamine tolerance and everything I've read has been positive. Even found some studies, etc.

Thanks for replying!
Jerry

Hi Jerry,

Yeah, it's me :)

Regarding memantine, I think it's still very theoretical at the moment. No major clinical trials. I wouldn't want to put you off trying it though if you think it might help.

Hey Ed!

This isn't a trial for dealing with tolerance - but it's interesting none-the-lease. Check it out:

Zinc and or Magnesium might help. Magnesium has been show to prevent (to some extent) the development of morphine tollerance (and to induce anagesic effects in its own right).

What about the cost of Memantine? Seems last I heard it was $$$!!! How do you find a Pdoc that is informed of the possible benefits to write a prescription?

That's what I'm trying to figure out - how to explain this all to my pdoc AND if my medicare insurance will pay for it as it's off-lable.

If you take stimulants everyday, its almost unavoidable that you will become somewhat tolerant. Would it be possible to not take the stimulant 1-2 days each week, or take a lower dose? Until I started Parnate, I took Adderall/Dexedrine for 5 years except for Sat/Sun, and the original dose remained effective. Depending on the severity of your symptoms and what you do on weekends, this might not be an option for you...but if you can do it, it is a great way to keep the meds effective.

I started out on 30mg a day of Dex and after 5 years only needed 10mg or less a day. I never had any tolerance issues.

I have not had tollerance issues with methylphenidate, but mind you, I'm not referring to mood related effects.
