Max dose of Zyprexa

Posted by rjlockhart04-08 on July 1, 2010, at 19:32:46

does anyone know what the max is? like 80mg in a severe case of mental illness for someone who was resitant to antipsychotics.

I've taken 25mg and I wished I could of stayed on that dose but it felt like a bunch of bricks where on my eyelids I couldnt stay awake, or function but I know Zyprexa is a potent nueroleptic. The only thing that makes me scared is it can start diebeities [misspelled].

I went up to 30mg one time and i started twitching really bad, i couldnt eat with out dropping the fork because I was so shakey, but that was only one time. I almost started some thing called Cogentin but never did. which was suppost to block the twiches it gives [zyprexa]

What do I tell my doctor if I want to move back up to 20mg, which I was on and it worked but the danm drug makes me sleepy that's the only thing. It's great with mood, zones out alot of negative thoughts.

anyone?

I don't know the real max dose. But the most I ever took in one day was 50mg. I took 30mg for a while. This was all just after the abilify which realy screwed me up, and made zyprexa less potent for a while. I've heard that the suggested max dose is 30mg. I also read that you could take up to some thing like 400mg before OD. Realy slow and tired. I take 15mg now. Seems to be right not too tired and not too fast, clear thinking. I also take 3x12mg perphenazine. Which seems to mean I don't need as high a dose of zyprexa.

If you are tired you might take less zyprexa or add wellbutrin sr.

I think you might be trying to replace the amphetamine with zyprexa. Maybe a stimulant with it would help. Wellbutrin goes well with it.

I don't know what else to tell you? Why do you want to take more zyprexa?

I think the FDA-approved max is 20mgs/day

I googled it and it looks like the longer trials used for FDA approval only went up to 20mgs/day. Some psychiatrists, of course, have gone higher for "treatment resistant schizophrenia"--I saw one paper mentioning a group of patients given 60mgs/day.

I think you should be careful with neuroleptics, especially something like Zyprexa that can be mind-numbing and tends to have a withdrawal syndrome and also causes crazy metabolic problems (although metformin might counter those...as might amantadine).

Good luck.

i was on 30mg for a while and it ... sort of made me twitch, i couldnt hold a fork because i would shake.

The only thing about Zyprexa is it is mind numbing and makes time feel like its earlier in time for some reason with me.

thanks

Did you gain weight on Zyprexa?

When I started Zyprexa I couldn't stay awake but the longer I have been on it I hardly feel any sedation. that is great it keeps your thoughts in line. Perhaps try and stick with it then as it is great news to hear that it is helping you.

I know that amantadine will counter things like akathisia, but does it also counter metabolic symptoms? I have not heard of it being used in that way.

amantadine for zyprexa-induced weight gain

I've only seen it at http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/meds/olanzapine.htm

but he's a shrink, so I imagine that its based on something.

Abstract
Patients with schizophrenia (Sch), schizoaffective, schizophreniform, or bipolar (BP) I disorders [Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV)]; not manic or acutely psychotic [Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) total score < or =45]; treated with olanzapine for 1-24 months; and who had gained > or =5% of their initial body weight were examined to determine whether amantadine could attenuate weight gain or promote weight loss. Olanzapine (Olz; 5-20 mg/day) was co-administered with double-blind treatment of 100-300 mg/day amantadine (Olz+Amt, n=60) or placebo (Olz+Plc, n=65). Visit-wise analysis of weight showed that weight change from baseline [last-observation-carried-forward (LOCF)] in the Olz+Amt group was significantly different from the Olz+Plc group at weeks 8 (P=0.042), 12 (P=0.029), and 16 (primary endpoint, mean+/-S.D.: -0.19+/-4.58 versus 1.28+/-4.26 kg, P=0.045). Mean BPRS total score, positive subscale, and anxiety-depression scores improved comparably in both groups, and Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) total score improved in the Olz+Amt group. Overall, amantadine was safe, was well tolerated, and attenuated weight gain or promoted weight loss in some patients who had gained weight during olanzapine therapy.
