Sertraline and Suicidal Periods

Posted by SA7 on June 27, 2010, at 18:28:15

I started taking Sertraline 2 months ago (100mg). For my past two periods, I have been really depressed, to the point where I think about suicide..I would never act on these thoughts but there are there, none the less..They go away as soon as it ends..Has anyone else had similar experiences on Sertraline?
Thanks for your help..

I'm so sorry that you're feeling that way during your periods. How is your mood otherwise when you are not going through your period? Do you still feel depressed? Putting female/male physiology differences aside for a second, 100mg of sertraline might not be a high enough dose for you. I took this drug for 9 years and I know that from trials the average therapeutic dose was around 150mg. For me, 150mg was the key dose that I began to feel substantially better in terms of depression and anxiety/panic. Perhaps, and please consult your doctor, increasing the dose to 150mg might help your overall mood and prevent the suicidal feelings during your period.

Thank you both for your response..I honestly feel like since I started therapy and medicine, I feel worse than before..In the past, it seemed that ignoring kept everything at bay..Now, I just feel exposed and vunerable..The depression feels more physical lately..It is harder to fake conversations and I really have no desire to do anything but I just keep on trucking, hoping something will change..The Zoloft helps the anxiety I feel in my chest, the pressure and squeezing is less, however, I never stop moving, shaking, tapping, touching..I am way more anxious, it just manifests itself differently..I will speak to the Dr. about raising the dose..Again, thank you!!

Hello, just something you may or may not want to consider, I know Gyn's prescribe a BC pill called Yaz, its supposed to help with PMS and depression type symptoms arising from hormonal fluxuations. Sorry, no experience with Sertraline.

Good luck!

I went to the Dr. today. He increased the Sertraline to 200mg and gave me Xanax. So we will see how it goes..
