Tianeptine: Is there a future for this med?

Posted by former poster on June 15, 2010, at 19:12:47

I tried Tianeptine, (Stablon) with minimal results and I just wonder what it is that keeps this drug on the market as I have rarely heard a positive thing said about it. Perhaps it could be used like LSD has been used in psychotherapy -The nightmares it gave me seemed to reveal the things in my life that needed to be addressed..."Dream therapy" Hmmm...

While on Stablon I experienced astonishing deep sleep. I would dream someone I knew died. The dreams were so vivid, detailed, intense. Every nightmare was about someone that meant a lot to me and I had neglected to contact for some time. I would wake up feeling kind of like I was coming unraveled. I wanted to contact that person and see if they were ok. After 2 weeks I discontinued taking the Stablon.

Tianeptine is a unique med, and not particularly less effective than regular antidepressants. It has analgetic properties. It has virtually no side-effects for most people - apart from the weird dreams..

That there is not much future for the drug is more because of its expired patent.. Noone can make much money out of it!

Unique indeed! I purchased it without a Dr. in a foreign country where prescriptions aren't necessary. If I had been safely at home, maybe I would have given it a longer trial? I wish it were available in US.

Deep sleep is different from Dream sleep for what its worth. It could be relevant if a drug increase the amount of time in REM sleep and decreases deep sleep. It sounds like tianeptine increases the intensity of REM sleep, but I wonder how it effects deep sleep.

Stages 3 & 4 (Deep Sleep) - Youre difficult to awaken, and if you are awakened, you do not adjust immediately and often feel groggy and disoriented for several minutes. Deep sleep allows the brain to go on a little vacation needed to restore the energy we expend during our waking hours. Blood flow decreases to the brain in this stage, and redirects itself towards the muscles, restoring physical energy. Research also shows that immune functions increase during deep sleep.
REM sleep (Dream Sleep) At about 70 to 90 minutes into your sleep cycle, you enter REM sleep. You usually have three to five REM episodes per night. This stage is associated with processing emotions, retaining memories and relieving stress. Breathing is rapid, irregular and shallow, the heart rate increases, blood pressure rises, males may have penile erections, and females may have clitoral enlargement.
