Klonopins vs. Neurontin

Posted by belinda508 on June 16, 2010, at 15:00:11

I just got out of treatment for opiates, but they also made me stop taking my klonopins, which I did not abuse since I started taking them in 2003. I only got out of treatment the day before yesterday and I've already had three panic attacks. Now my psych won't give me any more scripts for klonopin. She gave me a script for neurontin instead, and it isn't doing ANYTHING for me. I don't know what to do. I'm really not trying to get high. I just don't want to have any more panic attacks. Does anyone have any suggestions (besides buying them off the streets)??

Apparently, these days, if you have a problem with one drug, they can only give you overpriced and ineffective medications for all your problems b/c, God knows you'll abuse anything and everything you can get your hands on, right? WRONG. Its total BS, and I'm sorry you have to deal with this.

Neurontin (gabapentin) is pretty much snake oil. Its OK for some types of pain, but the drug has actually FAILED a number of controlled studies when used for other indications. Still, this is Psychiatry, not, you know, "science," so they still use it.

I don't know how your $$$ situation is or what your insurance is like, but can you bail and get a new doc? Klonopin *does* produce dependence if you use it everyday for an extended period of time, this is true, but its also extremely effective. Neurontin..not so much. I guess you could try BuSpar, but that rarely works, especially if you've been on benzos before using it.

So, yeah, I'd say find a new doc. Cash only docs are more expensive, but they're usually more reasonable when it comes to controlled substances. Some of them even run night and weekend hours.

It used to be that you could buy benzos online, no prob. There seems to have been something of a crackdown, so I don't know if that's still the case or if you even want to go that route (usually, the benzos would come in sheets--like they use in hospitals--from countries with looser regulations on controlled substances. Not legal at all, but usually the packages came through undetected.)

Niacinamide (B3) is a form of Niacin that doesn't cause the flush or lowering of cholesterol associated with niacin. In high doses (think several grams daily, spread out over 3 doses), it can relieve anxiety and enhance the effects of benzos and anticonvulsants (so, if you get like 1.5mgs/day klonopin, adding a couple grams of niacinamide will make that stuff work better and might help with tapering).

Again, I'm sorry this happened to you--I think its rather cruel to stick someone who just got out of rehab on some ineffective, overpriced chump pill just b/c they have some alleged addiction problem. I'd advise you not to give those docs anymore of your hard-earned money; you don't need to give them $$$ to be treated with contempt (just my 2 cents, btw).

Belinda did treatment wean you off the klonopin? How high is your normal dose? Did they continue giving it to you in rehab. Klonopin lasts a pretty long time in body. Could this be rebound anxiety? Phillipa

Some anti-depressants can be effective against anxiety. Cymbalta is one, but there are others -- ask your doc about those.

just a tip...

Good luck.

Neurontin made me psychotic

I gave it a good trial for 3 weeks. Day 4 I started getting a strange feeling. The feeling progressed each day to a feeling of "coming unraveled". After about 3 weeks i started having my first visual hallucination. I stopped it that evening found my Klonopin and took the maximum dose, woke up in the morning feeling better, hallucinations gone.

The main thing I remember about it was that while I was on it I had the only experiences of sleep paralysis I've ever had.

I figure it must do *something*. But that something must not have been what I needed. My pdoc took me off it right away.
