Marplan: Trying to be patient.. (SLS??)

Posted by zonked on June 7, 2010, at 21:00:58

Marplan has been upped to 50mg/day since Thurs or Friday. Friday was an OK day for me, felt more like myself; and in fact I was able to relax on my bed and just be myself (you all know that feeling--something robbed of so many of us in depression) and read--I even called my best friend and spoke on the phone for an hour!

Next morning I felt OK, and then the feeling slipped and has not returned yet.. Wondering if these brief periods are indicative that I may respond later or at a higher dose...(Started the drug on 5/13 I think.)

I am going to tough this out as long as I possibly can--I have found several anecdotal posts in various forums where folks have said it took 4-6 weeks.

What I'd really like to do is read the actual journal articles about this drug (not just the abstracts), but my social anxiety is so bad I wonder if I can make it to the med school library and back.

Can anyone blame me for being obcessed with getting this illness under control again? I am tired of suffering--my Mom has brain cancer and I want to get better before she gets sick.

SLS--did you give up on Marplan? I'd really like to know how you're doing...

Hi Zonked.

> SLS--did you give up on Marplan?

I almost did. I would like to continue at 60mg per day. Unfortunately, my pharmacy was unable to fill a new prescription this weekend, and I have been forced to take only 20mg a day. I am hoping that they will receive it from their wholesaler tomorrow morning.

I encourage you to continue with your treatment according to plan. The experiences you described appear to be positive and might possibly be indicators of a more robust response to come. I know how hard it is to be patient when there are no guarantees.

Scott,

Thanks for responding--it sort of made my otherwise typical day. Waiting for a med is the hardest thing in the world.. I still believe we can both remit...and hopefully an increase of dose and/or time will bring us into full remission.

I know how much you've struggled and wanted to thank you for being such a source of support, knowledge and encouragement. I certainly wouldn't find the kind of support I get here in any face to face support group I've ever attended.

You wouldn't happen to know how platelet MAO inhibition was measured in the clinical trials for the MAOIs would you? I believe one of the abstracts said that Marplan dose was increased until "90% platelet MAO inhibition was achieved."

This Thursday, I meet my new permanent psychiatrist (no more crisis clinic!) I hope she is knowledgable, flexible, and open-minded. If she is MAOI-phobic or benzophobic I will probably hit the yellow pages... Finding a doctor who takes Medicare/Medicaid outside of the county public health system may prove a challenge.

Thanks, FB.

I picked up my Marplan from the pharmacy earlier today. I will be taking 60mg per day. It makes sense to give it at least three weeks.

I hope the above indicates that you might get to be yourself on this med

i got a little jealous reading it

good luck

Don't give up hope--it's helped me to remember what remission's felt like.
