Might sound silly but I'm bored and rushing in my head just to get out and do what? Why can't I just relax like others seem to and is there a med for boredom. I know it's dumb. But thought I'd ask. As I wear myself out being bored. Phillipa

I wish that I were bored. I experience boredom only when my depression improves. Otherwise, I am simply too vegetative and remain content to sit still and stare into space.

Scott not to sound un empathetic but this means I'm not depressed? If not I truly don't understand the horrible pain you're in and I'm truly sorry. I still keep thinking of the three day blip has to be a reason. I will keep looking. Love Phillipa

Alcohol had been my drug to banish boredom -- worked for a long time, then it didn't & the crashing anxiety began.

Sounds like we're all in the stew one way or another. Anxiety is terrible. Depression is terrible.
I'm wondering if I am *just* fatigued or is my fatigue a sign of worsening depression. Cognitively alright, relatively. Can drop about 10,000 feet in minutes. The abyss always seems at hand. I climb out faster, though :)
Cheers all!

Me too Scott. When I am even just a little depressed, I just don't get bored. I'm content to sleep all day, keep refreshing a website or just stare into space.
One of the most interesting things I noticed when I am doing really well is that I get bored and want to do things, like go out and try new things.

Really interesting. Seems like maybe mild depression is the culprit? Phillipa

Once I'm bored, it means that I'm no longer depressed but need a purpose in life.
That tells me I need a focus or a job in order to feel fulfilled.
When I'm in the middle of a depression, that is a completely different situation as you can't even formulate a thought that you are bored.
Boredom is a sign that I might be ready to attempt to go back to work or do do something for others, like volunteering or rescuing animals, one of my passions, when I'm not working and not too depressed to be catatonic.
Phillipa, do you have a cause that you could volunteer for? That would give you a focus outside of yourself which is always helpful with any condition that is internalized, such as depression or anxiety. Outward focus is really what I find helps with an abnormal focus on our internalizations. That I believe is at the route of both depression and anxiety.
I find hard physical or mental work, even if part-time, is very helpful with depression and anxiety.

Stargazer, what a helpful post. Yes, outside work helps me--outside meaning something interpersonal. That is, when I am not too depressed. For anxiety, it's an excellent tonic.
And maniac, a good walk in the woods helps me quite a bit. That and gardening.
A friend is trying to get me over to teach me weaving. Hope I have the concentration :)

Why wear yourself out being bored and feeling guilty about it. There's no commandment that one has to do something. The boredom is not the problem but the guilt is. If there's something I want to watch on tv I watch it. I don't feel guilty and stressed about it.
Now the people who are advising you to do fun things are also giving you good advice. I love loading the dogs in the car and going somewhere where there are other dogs and dog people.
If there's something you love to do than do it or learn how to do it. You have dogs. So take them out to a dog park. That's a lot of fun. Or if you have a petsmart take the dogs there.
But stop stressing yourself out about relaxing if you just feel like crashing. However if your just to lethargic or unmotivated to do anything than maybe you are depressed. I know you are anti med and scared of sides. But life is passing you by. Depression also takes a toll on your life. I to am getting older and am trying meds because I just can't do things when I'm in a deep depression. I've taken drugs for several months and felt good enough to do things. So for me that is a plus inspite of sides.
How many years have been been hanging around babble gathering info. Really time to make a move. Life is passing you by. You're to obsessed with sides. Just take a chance.

Dogs are wonderful. They don't know self-pity :)
When I am really depressed, I can't connect with dogs. Terrifying, really.
Miss my old lab. Now she was quite a gal. Hated to see me cry. She'd look concerned, then leave the room :) (Showed good sense.) My doxie cuddles up. Has been known to lick tears. (My son's too.) He's got big dog soul for a little guy. A true, sweet hound.
I can tell my depression is less because we're talking about another lab. If the fatigue doesn't do me in.
Hope this post isn't sent to alt/healing--canine therapy.

According to my son, bored is:
Like a boat. You get on board.
Like when you have nothing to do and you're like, ahhhgh. (He falls back on the bed and looks frustrated and listless.)
A wild boar. Like when you're chased by a wild boar. You're bored.
(He shoots a finger gun at the ceiling. I don't think this was meant to be illustrative.)

For me boredom is my next step out of depression. At this stage I like to go to live music. I try to find a non-alcoholic environment and something before my bedtime. Not always easy to find that in my town, but sometimes I get lucky. Very uplifting and doesn't require a lot of energy.
