GABA inhibitor like Nardil; Lemon balm

Posted by CaptainAmerica1967 on May 31, 2010, at 3:22:05

For all of those who've had great experiences with Nardil's GABA inhibitory effects on anxiety, panic, terror, social phobia, etc, there's some interesting research done on Lemon balm's extract for the treatment of anxiety and stress by preventing the breakdown of GABA. It's most likely not as potent as Nardil but should have less adverse side effects.

Cyracos, a patented extract of Lemon balm, melissa officinalis, is a potent inhibitor of GABA transaminase, GABA-T, like Nardil's mechanism of action.

I just added a study to Wikipedia's "gamma-Aminobutyric acid" under "GABA-transaminase inhibitors." The only other know GABA-transamines inhibitors listed are; gabaculine, phenelzine, valproate, vigabatrin. Phenelzine and valproate are the probably the safest of these four listed with gabaculine being a neurotoxin and vigabatrin or Sabril having the potential of permanent retinal detachment.

I've used phenelzine for years (15) but went off it when it stopped working after the formulation change back in 2004? It worked quite well prior to that and better than any of the benzodiazepines or other GABA enhancers like gabapentin which I currently take along with Cymbalta and Xanax and have taken the gabapentin with Ativan and Klonopin as well. Only "Xyrem" or GHB is better for anxiety, depression, sleep, hyperthermia, panic, racing heart, etc, but the rebound anxiety is very intense when it wears off.

Here are some studies on the Lemon balm extract.
