Having some surgery end of next week and since sleeping too well cut .5 of xanax out last night from l.5mg and .25valium. Been on benzos over 40 years. How come I slept just as well and feel nothing different shouldn't I feel horrible? I don't get it? Phillipa ps Anesthesia last time had surgery left me not wanting to breath in recovery so want off some of benzos

That just shows you how little meds might actually be doing even after when you are convinced they have an effect.
Have you ever stopped Xanax or tried to in 40 years? What was the lowest dose you got to?
I think alot could be related to the placebo effect. Probably after 40 years the effect is minimal anyway.
But you know I'm always trying new meds and not settling for a half way response as I have to be really functional if I want to work again. There is no room for marginal performance with any job today. Too much pressure to kick you out on your *ss if you don't have what it takes.
What are your daily symptoms that you take meds for?
YOu could just hold the dose at 1 mg and leave it at that. One day when you feel braver you could reduce to 0.75, just to see what happens.
There are so many variables related to meds that it's nice that you were able to reduce the dose and have nothing happen. It could be different in a few days too.
Good luck with surgery...

Stargazer thinking that since thyroid is now l.6 middle of goal to aim for by endocrinologist more in homeostasis. Lowest was none except .125 every other day. At the doc the doc said he doubted it did a thing. But if didn't take that I could feel anxiety beginning. Now not always xanax. Times when ativan or just valium. I do remember a drug free interval also when started nursing. Was just so happy. Yes the size is small. Will continue the lmg. After surgery go down more no side effects at all today more awake I do think. That's a good thing. No don't sleep til 2pm. Go to bed at 3am and up at ll am. That's due to posting our items for sale on ebay. As you know I work the best at night guessing from 3-ll shifts. Love Phillipa

Need to call plastic surgeons nurse tomorrow and find out if they wish me to take the benzos the night before. My Son called and in DC he's friends with an Anestheologist and he told him no problem putting people to sleep but waking them up and last surgery didn't want to breath. Don't need that to happen again. And you just don't stop benzos after 40 years of use. But since don't use Ashton Method here can do quicker much quicker taper. Phillipa

No body's business but yours... BUT, Implants this time? (I kid, I kid...Smile)
I don't think your benzo use is doing much from a PHYSIOLOGICAL standpoint for you at this time. Psychologically, may be another story, which may be why you aren't noticing much in effects with cutting down.
I was on the long acting benzo I use during my nonelective recent surgery and it did not pose a problem for me at a therapeudic dosing. Plus, they dosed me up with Valium in PreOp. Some folks don't wake up or recover their resp. drive as quickly as others BUT recovery folks should be well-versed in the management of that as they see all types of individuals and how they respond. Anesthesia does clear despite what you may believe....IF your OR & Recovery staff is competent, you will be corrected managed until it does.
My experiences and opinions are just FYI, of course, you should do what your medical team suggests.

Glydin thanks your support appreciated. No boobs for me never not a boob person!!!! Seriously I just don't seem to need benzos anymore my chemistry has changed. Three days now and nothing for a short acting benzo should be gone. Age not 67 as you know. Doesn't matter though. Seriously they dosed you with benzos pre op? Do you mean versed? Personally I'd prefer Twilight sleep with versed as had eyelids done when 40's and was awake talking to surgeon at time. No pain. Simple recovery ice sterile normal saline back at work day four no bruising. Surgery will take place in his operating suite. He uses Licensed Anesthesiologists one of the resons using him didn't want all the germs of MRSA etc in the hospital. I will write and let you know what I'm doing. As I prefer to comment privately. Love Phillipa

~~~ I took Klonopin 1 mg at home about an hour before leaving for the hosital. And, Yep, Valium 10 mgs. in the Surg. Admit. A 1/2 hr. later, Versed in Holding once IV in.
I really didn't like Versed that much - first time I had been given any - as it caused ALOT of fragmented memories of the time and feelings of being VERY aware I wasn't controlling myself or my mouth or anything.... I would have probably been alright with it had I not been so acutely aware of the effects. Versed did what it was suppose to do but I liked the mellow messed up benzo feeling better as it was calming and not troubling to me....felt I had SOME judgement with just them on board. (Smile)
