I just started Tofranil PM 75mg, which I take a bedtime. So far I feel pretty decent with not a whole lot of side effects. Feels a bit like an SNRI but I'm not feeling overly jittery or anxious like on them. Also the sexual side effects seem to be less than SNRIs. Are people still taking/having success with this medication (especially men). Also is 75mg the usual dose, or do people tend to go up? I do notice the feeling to need to urinate a big more often (does this go away)?

Good to hear. I don't think docs still like to prescribe that drug a lot until they've exhausted other options.
I would stay at the dose you are on for a little while and see if you keep having improvements. The more you increase the dose the more side effects so it might be good to give it a bit more time at 75mgs. How long have you been on it?

How come they don't like to prescribe it? Phillipa

Sides, cardiac problems, they're too young and don't know anything about it.

Well, I just started a TCA which my pharmacy had to order...they don't usually stock it..
I guess the docs prefer not to use these drugs...dosing is a bit trickier maybe?
There seem to be some postings recently about folks taking tricyclics.
Let's keep our fingers crossed!!

In reality the cardiac problems are very rare and dose related. I am 63 and on clomipramine 75 mg and sides are very mild.

Of course, they're not that bad but they had to scare everyone in order to market the SSRIs.

I agree - I had many more side effects on SSRIs than on TCAs. The TCAs side effects lessen with time and worked well for me - the SSRIs side effects seem to hang on for the entire time I was on them - plus for me - little AD effect.

That is interesting, I have heard that many times about TCAs, that the initial side effects decrease after the first couple weeks, but I always forget that and wonder if I should really give them a try. SSRI sides kinda blow.

I think if you want to give them a try - you need to decide that you're not going to make any decisions for at least 1 month - give the med some time to work, and some time for the side effects to lessen - which they usually do. Good Luck

Update: I'm feeling some slight pain and a constant feeling like I need to urinate. When I go, its feels difficult to empty the balder. Does this every go away because it's annoying.

It was the original antidepressant, and no doubt still one of the most effective (more so than ssri's) It is safe to take and the side effects usually go away or diminish over time. You may want to try bethenechol, which will get rid of most of the side effects of imipramine.

You can find info on it in wikipedia. Its is a muscarinic agonist, so it would block the anti-muscarinic effects of the TCAs hypothetically if it binds more potently than the TCAs do to those receptors. Never heard of it before.

I find the ssris give more anxiety effects than the tcas. I have found the sides much smoother with clomipramine than ssris on start up. The only thing that bothers me on tcas is constipation which I handle with laxatives.
