Posted by deprime82 on April 18, 2010, at 5:40:17

hey!

can somebody tell me if i shall washout the benzo bromazepam (1.5mg 2*) before switching to atarax (hydroxyzin) or if i can change to it from one day to the other?

i want to avoid the benzo-addiction..

yours, dep82

p.s.: by the way, does anyone know, if bromazepam interacts with selegiline if taken together?

I would taper the bromazepam to be sure. As a side note, atarax inhibits MAO-B like selegeline.
(Not is primary mode of action but....)

If you have been taking bromazepam for more than a couple of weeks, I would reduce the dose gradually and stop before starting hydroxyzine. If you have only been taking bromazepam for a few days, I would stop it abruptly and start hydroxyzine the next day.

Hydroxyzine is somewhat sedating. It is claimed to be useful for non-severe generalised anxiety. It is a relatively safe medication which does not cause dependence, although it is only suitable for mild anxiety.

dunno know.. i just know that atarax is used for the substitution of benzos in benzo-withdrawal and seems to be quite useful: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18379511

How will you treat your anxiety?.
If you want to discontinue treatment I would just decrease the dose over time. At that dose I donīt think there will be a problem.

my current anxiety is lifetime-dependent: I'm doing a pracitcal year and additionally I'm making a master's degree in an "evening-school", there is much pressure to perform.
in addition, my girlfriend (5.5 year relationship) left me 3 months ago.

i have never taken benzos before and wouldn't have proposed it, but i was at the end of my rope ->suicidally, unable to cope with everydays-work.

so the doctor gave me 50 tabs of 3mg bromazepam to cope with the current crisis.

as for me I know I will have to take it until the summer holidays when I've got the time to "break down" mentally. until then I will have taken the bromazepam for 2.5 months - this is even a long time.
and I really absolutely don't want to become addicted to benzos, so I am not sure if I should continue treatment so long.

on the other hand the risk of an addiction weighs less than the risk of losing its life in this crisis (I know myself, I know much literature and I know that I was already seriously suicidal-> no concrete plans, but continous thoughts, no meaning in life, no more pleasure, no future etc.)

I don't know if anybody was already in a similuar situation, but in the end I decided for the benzo because I decided for life..

I donīt think 3 mg bromazepam for 2.5 months will cause any problem to withdraw. Also I doīt see why you want atarax, a much less effective drug.

If bromazepam is working and not causing problems with your concentration I would continue while you evaluate alternatives like therapy or maybe tianeptine.

I am taking 1.5 mg bromazepam at night. Today I took another dose in the morning but at midday I feel sedated, maybe because of food. I have to speak in public many times and I no longer like it (or the subject). I also broke with a girlfriend so I perfectly understand your situation.

Maybe I need an antidepressant, my mood is low. I have no energy to do the things I need.

okay, franz, it seems like you're maybe in a similar situation (but as for myself I personally didn't break up with my relationship;)) do you understand german (cause of your name)?

today i've just tried atarax and yes, it has got a much milder effect than bromazepam, unfortunately..

it's just that in austria benzodiazepines are mainly demonized and many doctors tell you to keep your hands of it.

so the patients get scared by the doctors that they could become addicted to the benzos..

but yes, my mother took lexotanil for half a year, too, and withdrawal wasn't a problem..
it's probably also a matter of the dosage, 1.5-3mg isn't too much, so withdrawal after 2 months shouldn't be so infernal..
