Possible Effexor side effects

Posted by Nick Wilkening on April 19, 2010, at 11:13:16

I've been on 150mg Effexor XR and 30mg Mirtazipine for several months, recently had issues with a nervous tick involving a strong urge to shake my head. I've had this issue before (several years ago, prior to being on any meds) and my doctor believes it's related to tourette's. I'm switching from Effexor XR to sertraline (Zoloft), currently taking 50mgs of this and discontinued the Effexor XR yesterday. Anyone had Tourette's symptoms as a result of taking these meds?

Hello Nick Wilkening!

Welcome to Psycho-Babble! I went through a brief period while in my teens where I had the compulsion to shake my head. I don't know what caused it. I had had my first depressive episode and had just started taking meds. Fortunately the shaking went away. I was on Zoloft then. I'm not sure that it was caused the the meds. I don't remember the details. It's possible I wasn't even taking meds yet. I don't know if it was Tourettes or not.

I hope you figure out what is causing your head to shake and that it stops soon.

Deneb

Hi Nick, I am also new to Psycho-Babble but not new to Effexor. I have been taking 150mg. daily for a number of years and have had no adverse side effects. I have a long history of depression but find that this medication helps me maintain an even outlook on life. This has continued in spite of a number of difficult life changes that would have been devastating for me in the past. Good luck with your new medication regimen.
