Which MAOI is right for me???

Posted by jms600 on March 25, 2010, at 18:02:57

I'm currently in the process of trying to persuade my doctor to prescribe me an MAO inhibitor for my severe panic disorder, GAD, social phobia and unipolar depression. I have been on countless medications (including benzos) and cocktails with only limited success.

Which MAOI should I go for? I hear that Nardil (phenelzine) is the drug of choice for anxiety but has the worst side effect profile - particularly weight gain and sexual dysfunction?

How bad is the weight gain on Nardil? Is it as bad a that caused by, say, 15mg daily of Zyprexa?

How bad is the sexual dysfunction? Is it as bad a that caused by, say, 30mg daily of Paxil?

Is Nardil really the answer? Would I be better choosing Parnate or Marplan instead?? Are they just as good for severe anxiety disorders??

Only one way to know my man...

Try them out. I'd say try Nardil first, great success rate.

I'm on day 7 of my trial of Marplan. Still on a small dose of 20mg (PDR says you can go to 40mg by the end of week one but I'm bipolar 1 so my doc wants to go slow).

So far so good as far as side effects. No weight change. No sexual side effects. But I did get a little manicy about two days ago (racing thoughts related to past manic episodes I've had).

Today I've felt really good though and I've actually picked up my guitar for the first time in a long while (I've played for 12yrs but the last year just haven't been able to get myself to enjoy it).

So I'm just hoping it doesn't send me into mania nor start causing me to gain weight. Cause if my attitude and behavior today is from the Marplan then it's starting to do it's job :)

I'll try to update my experience since it seems so few are on Marplan.

I was on Parnate prior to Marplan. I know some will question my doc on this but we didn't do a washout. So perhaps I'm still getting effects from the MAO inhibition of Parnate. I was forced to come off Parnate due to high BP issues that weren't related to food.

Parnate was good though aside from the blood pressure problem. I spent 3 months on it tapering up to 70mg. I was pretty driven and I think it helped a lot with self-confidence in social situations. It didn't really make me _feel_ good or enjoy things as much as I would have hoped though.

I also take:

Lithium (900mg)
Lamictal (200mg)
Seroquel (100mg for sleep)
Fish Oil (Minami Pharmaceutical Grade MorEPA)
Magnesium (glycinate)

Ive taken Nardil for a year and Parnate for a year
Nardil I gained 45lbs in a year and was insanely hungry, it also gave me sexual dysfunction similar to paxil 30, yes. Parnate was wight neutral and had no sexual dysfunction BUT the insomnia was bad and my heart would race everytime I took my dose and I would get tired for about 2 hrs. thats just me tho... maybe try Nardil first because of its good track record for anxiety, sound like you have bad anxiety... Parnate was more stimulating.
