Buspar + Prozac = dangerous combo ?????

Posted by Viking on March 14, 2010, at 12:24:45

I tried to order Buspar and Prozac from my online pharmacy today. My order was rejected, because this combination of meds was considered dangerous.

I have searched the Internet without finding any documentation, that this combo should be dangerous. On the contrary, I have seen numerous examples of this combo being used.

I have used this combo before and found that it worked very well for some time before pooping out. I do therefore wnt to try it again.

Now I have the following questions to all the experts here on PB:

- why should this combo be dangerous?
- does anyone have personal experience with this combo?

thanks in advance

My doctor had prescribed that combo to me in the past. It didn't work out for me, but it wasn't considered dangerous. Come to think of it, 2 doctors prescribed that combo for me.

At the time I inputted the 2 drugs into one of those internet drug checking sites, and the contradiction was seratonin syndrome. However, many drug combinations regularly prescribed warn of seratonin syndrome. Maybe the contradiction has more weight for higher than average doses?

Buspar is an established augmentation for ssris. It was used in the STAR*D study as well.

Some sources may fear the potential of serotonin syndrome. While that risk is always present, in this case I believe it is very low.

The supplier is probably being extra cautious, not for your sake, but their own.

Hi,

I've been on Prozac and Buspar.
Hated Prozac, no problem with the combo.

However, combining these drugs is not recommended.
Warning for serotonergic syndrome!

Best regards,
X-ray

I have often taken Buspar with SRI's SSRI's & SNRIs with no problem, and I'm particularly sensitive to Serotonin overload. The website I used to check my med combination rated it as just a "caution", not a warning, and my pharmacist says the risk is very low.

If I have been informed correctly, the idea that combining buspirone (Buspar) and fluoxetine (Prozac) could lead to serotonin syndrome is based on the false or dubious assumption that 5HT1A (indirect) agonism is one of the causes of serotonin syndrome (SS). Buspar is a 5HT1A-agonist, and Prozac through its SRI is an indirect agonist of these receptors. I think newer research has shown that SS is not or probably not 5HT1A-mediated. So saying that this is a 'dangerous' combination is way overboard.

Any (S)SRI can cause SS *by itself*, i.e. *on its own*. So if pharmacies want to eliminate the risk of SS, they shouldn't sell any SRI anymore.
