Best Antidepressant For Pain?

Posted by bulldog2 on January 30, 2010, at 16:47:09

I'm looking for an ad that would work on arthritis and fibromyalgia pain in the legs. For some reason last year parnate took away calf pain and spasms but was not friendly to arthritis.

I've heard that effexor is related th tramdaol.I need about 300 mg tramadol to make the fibro and arthritis manageable. I also want a med that works for depression and anxiety.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Cymbalta? I think it's marketed that way.

Nortriptyline.

Thanks...thanks to all... I have 30 mg cymbalta samples at home. so no one recommends effexor?

To Bleauberry...I also noticed that parnate made the calf pain go away. But it was very unfriendly to my arthritis. I believe the noradrenaline is not good for that type of pain.

In all seriousness I took 60mg of cymbalta when living at the beach, walked five miles a day on the beach and lifted weights at health club no pain. But found babble and watched the nonresponse of another first time ever online and stopped the cymbalta and I had all kinds of aches and pains so the cymbalta must have kept them away. I also have a full bottle of cymbalta. It did nothing for anxiety though. Phillipa

Neurontin(Gabapentin) & it's cousin lyrica are both supposed to help w/ pain. Guess they're not technically ADs but some say they help w/ mood stabilization as well....

From the Gabapentin Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabapentin):

Gabapentin is frequently used to treat various types of Neuralgia. It has been found to be effective in prevention of frequent migraine headaches,[9] neuropathic pain[10] and nystagmus,[11] and is prescribed off-label (that is, without formal regulatory agreement) for these conditions. Gabapentin is widely believed to help patients with post-operative chronic pain (usually caused by nerves that have been severed accidentally in an operation and when grown back, have reconnected incorrectly) and nerve pain associated with spinal cord injury. It may be effective in reducing pain and spasticity in multiple sclerosis.[12], and has also had success in treating certain instances of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.[13][14]

Tramadol supposedly has AD properties. Amitriptyline is good for pain/depression.

I am taking neurontin for mood elevation and for anxiety. It is helping in those areas but is not working on pain. Did have some tramadol at home and took 300 mg with the neurontin. The combo worked wonderffully on pain and mood.
But due to the fact that tramadol can cause addiction cannot take every day. Maybe something like amitriptyline might help. Might even combine that with low dose parnate.

I don't know if tramadol is "addictive". Its not technically a pure opiate. It does interact a little with opiate receptors (as does effexor and the TCA's to a lesser extent), but pain modulating effects are also due to interaction with serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake.

The norepinephrine transport has some effects on the duration of opiate analgesia. NRI's have pain killing effects in their own right. SSRI's, to a lesser extent, can also modulate pain perception.

I wouldn't say that tramadol is any more addictive than effexor. I know some people who use it long term for depression.

I've been taking Savella for two months now, more for fatigue than pain but I really like it. I feel better, I haven't noticed any interactions with my other medications (Wellbutrin XR 300mg, Nuvigil 250 mg, either Ritalin LA 40mg 2xday or Adderall 30mg 3xday and whole thyroid extract) and best of all - minimal sexual side effects! Slight loss of libido but no orgasm inhibition.

Bulldog
I had a similar experience with Parnate but even more successful as far as pain.

I'm doing pretty well with the pain issue taking Cymbalta
