wellbutrin vs. buproprion - allergy difference?

Posted by LongRoad on February 6, 2010, at 14:48:57

I've been on both and seemed to develop an allergy while on buproprion (generic version).

I know there are a lot of posts comparing efficacy of brand vs generic and a lot on allergies to the med in general, but my question is:

Is one more likely to get an allergy to generic buproprion vs the brand (wellbutrin)?

Thanks for any replies.

It could be that you're allergic to an ingredient in the generic that isn't in the brand, like an additive of some sort. Switching to a different generic might help, though with wellbutrin, it seems like the original is better overall. Too bad it costs so much more.

Has anyone used buproprion, developed an allergy, and then continued to use it anyway? Did you take an anti-allergen with it if so? Or did the reaction fade over time? Experiences requested - thanks.

Ok, now I'm hearing that sometimes people are allergic to the XL vs SR or IR variations. So I am trying the SR.

I know there are many postings about buproprion and allergies here, but I haven't seen anything comparing different formulations in relation to allergies. If someone has experience with this, please let me know. Thanks.

I have been taking plain old Zyban because WB was not avail where I was. Looks like Zyban is the same exact as Wellbutrin SR which is sold in the US. New Dr just switched me to Bupropion XL, and I am having some annoying side effects. It feels like an allergy, but I can't say it is - I just have blurry vision, feels like my eyes are swollen, a bit of acid reflux and headachey which is very odd for me, and pretty bad night sweats. The worse is that I am binging on food like there is no tomorrow.

This is day 5 or so - at first I thought the dose was higher, and that is why I was having these side effects (have been on WB and WB SR for ages, then the Zyabn).

Looks like Bupropion XL has another drug called Aplenzin in it. I guess I have the generic. I wonder if the WB XL has the Aplezin in it also, and if not, that is what causes the side effects of the generic?

Anyone have any ideas? I am not liking these side effects - it is like changing medications entirely, and what I had was working quite well.

Thanks for your post, it at least sheds some light on part of why I could be getting allergic reactions. The Bupropion SR from Sandoz also seemed to be causing a rash for me. I couldn't tell for sure if it was a continuation from the Budeprion XL I'd been on for a week or if it's the generic SR. Either way, I stopped taking it.

Being that the brand worked for me years ago without allergy, I just got my doc to fill a script for the brand. I'm going to wait until the rash subsides and try it. If anyone has had the generic SR cause a rash but afterward tried the brand and had it not cause an allergy, I'd be interested to know. Since one can develop an allergy to the active ingredient itself even where one didn't exist before, it's tough to know what's actually going on. But after I start the brand WB, I guess I'll have an idea.

As far as your situation, Puravida, can you tell your doc what you posted here and get switched back to Zyban? If not, maybe one of the other formulations of a generic might work (SR, IR, or a different company's generic). Good luck.

LR,

Glad it helped. I skipped a day and then took it again yesterday and today. I don't seem to have the side effects - knock on wood. I still feel a bit funny in the eyes/throat, but have not had night sweats the past two nights. I did almost call the Dr to have it switched, but I figured I'd give it at least a week. Maybe the impact of the added alplenzin was just a shock and I needed to take it slower than doing just a straight switch.

I know is that it does take a week or two for me to adjust to side effects sometimes, and I have to be patient, annoying as it is.

I wish the info about these different versions of drugs was more straight forward...

I'll post back if I find anything else out or if I have any other news on how its working for me. Good luck to you as well!

Puravida, (pure life?) Did you get hives from this or any kind of rash?

LR,

Yes, literally "pure life" but in Costa Rica they use it more as "good life" or "full life" -

No hives - never had them. When I get allergic reactions it is mainly respiratory -

Costa Rica? Mi Amigo dice es muy bonito.

Just trying to piece together my small knowledge of Spanish. It's probably not right, but did I get the gist?

As far as the WB, it sounds like I may have a chance at least of not being allergic with the brand?

Tried Brand WB, SR version over the last few days and broke out in rash on face, neck, chest and back. Took Benadryl and it has subsided a lot but is still present. Guess I got my answer.
