horrible moods in morning?

Posted by Roslynn on January 19, 2010, at 16:31:41

Hi, does anyone else experience a serious mood swing throughout the day such as crying spells and despair in morning, terrible thoughts running through your head, then by afternoon things have mostly cleared up?

Are there any chemical or biological explanations for such a severe shirt in mood? My best mood is actually at about 2AM when I wake up...weird!

How you handle this type of thing?

Thank you,
Roslynn

Not sure I have an answer but I do have those symptoms.

I wake up with terrible anxiety, physical pain and an extremely pessimistic mood. It usually starts clearing up around noon, but it takes a dip about 2 or 3.

Black coffee with a tbsp of raw cocoa powder seems to give me a semblance of well being for a while.

I went through the morning blues for a while. The only thing I did was realize it was going to get better (although there still may be something that may help)
Sorry, I know it sucks.

Same here all kinds of negativity and bad thoughts. I stay up til 3am and up at 11am but it doesn't help. I'm now just coming alive. Phillipa

Thank you guys for answering. At least I know I am not alone.
My relatively ok times are 1pm-4pm and then 6pm to about 5am. 5am to 9am anxiety and dread, and then 9am to 1pm is my worst time..Between 4pm and 6pm I have mostly anxiety...

What the heck, i don't know what's going on...

I know sometimes I wake up, and I just say "it's another day", I have had despair in the mornings because I think I'm not anywhere in life right now.

When you wake up, are you in distress because of life? or is more of just "i feel horrible" because, that's depresssion peaking it's effect, yet it can go much farther down into the "pitts" of sorrow.

One thing you can do, I alway's have found stimulants effective for depression and ADD, yet it's not the awnser for everything, talk to your doctor about adding Nuvigel or Provigel to an antidepressant, because Provigel does get things going for you. Lamictal is something good, but I don't know if it would help because it's effect's are not as "noticable"

I'm trying to think of a cognitive solution..mmm
Try to buy a CD that is "pleasant" music, either new age, or calming music ment to calm. Have someone to talk to on the phone you maybe call in the morning.

I'm still thinking...

i hate mornings too. if i ever am in a good mood it's at night, usually late.
i can't even talk to people for like 2 hours after i wake up.
i wonder if it's because we have things that distract us throughout the day to make it better or if it's just a chemical thing?

Hi rjlockhart,

I think when I wake up it feels like a chemical thing...cause it's immediate..then it is followed by negative thoughts then more bad feelings...like a cycle..

I am bipolar II....I don;t know if I am supposed to take stimulants...but that is a good idea.

Thank you for your suggestions!

I think you would find a cortisol test very interesting. I would venture a bet that the curve of your 24 hour cortisol plotted on a graph would look exactly like your moods.

The test is available from some places online that give "home lab tests", or from Alternative MDs, Integrative MDs, or Naturopathic clinicians.

It involves taking a saliva sample in test tubes 4 times throughout a 24 hour period and sending them to the lab. The cortisol tests you would get from an Endo specialist are worthless...they only show your cortisol at that time of the test, or an average of a 24 hour period, or whether your cortisol is dead or alive, but nothing inbetween and no picture of how it fluctuates throughout the day and night.

Cortisol has a distinct curve in healthy people. It rises highest in the morning to meet the stresses of a new day, and gradually declines after that.

Mine was extremely off the charts high at 2am, then dropped to extreme below normal throughout the day, and then began to rise to just below normal in early evening.

My moods...
2am An adrenaline rush that woke me up in fear and anxiety.

Daytime...depressed, sluggish, lethargic, especially between 2pm and 4pm when the cortisol dipped its lowest.

Early evening...always felt the best of the day at this time, sometimes so good I did not want to go to bed because I knew it would be all over.

This pattern repeated daily for weeks, months, and years.

The pattern can be changed back to normal with some pharmaceutical and/or herbal help. Diet food choices also play a role.

Whenever I see daily fluctuating moods that tend to repeat day after day, I pretty much know cortisol is most likely the underlying culprit.

In my own theories and observations, I think SSRIs and atypical antipsychotics can actually create this syndrome when it didn't exist prior. Balanced approaches with equal attention to both serotonin and norepinephrine (as in SSRI+TCA, or Savella) prevent this syndrome and reverse it back to normal if it exists prior.

Hey blu got to write to you need serious help with some lyme Western blot results no doc can interrpret. And interestingly enough today at pdoc just home and two drug reps there very nice and got to talking they reped lexapro. Said the med was found in Europe by owner that bought the company for lex as was selling vitamins and candy and his Son got depressed switched careers and took an active role went to Europe and found lex or something similar created it and his Son became better. He also just created the savella also. Also they said lexapro no generic for and celexa is substituted but different isomer and also lex not good for anxiety didn't know that. Also she suggested zoloft for me. Also said relative took effexor horrible withdrawal liquid prozac to wean off then weaned off prozac. Sorry for hijacking. Just home in hurry to see what' new today. Blu also agree with the cortisol as even blood sugar does the same irreguardless to what you ate and time of day as same on two days and one result in 80's and one 126. And same with hormone testing need to also discuss this with you. Love Jan
