People on Parnate sometimes report spontaneous spikes in BP unrelated to diet.

I only started with 150mg. It's just odd that it would interact last night and yet today my blood pressure stayed really low. That's why I don't think it was the Wellbutrin. Anyway, I'm going to keep really close tabs on my BP for a few days!

How much parnate are you taking at this point?

For some people, wellbutrin and parnate don't mix, also. Maybe some people can combine the two, but not everyone can, depending on individual biology

Was the timing different yesterday compared to today?

Yes..the last time I was on Parnate I spent a nite in the ER..I had far too many spontaneous BP spike episodes..and I wasn't augmenting with anything and followed the MAOI diet to a "T".

You were very lucky this time..I'd hate to see anything bad happen to you. Here's a link to one of his posts with Ace

Earlier in the day I had had my protein shake.

I seem to remember reading that certain kinds of protein powder contained tyramine. OTOH, you had your shake in the morning and blood pressure soared in the evening. So that;s probably not it.

Are you sure that Wellbutrin is ok with Parnate? It would seem that, if not, it would be more likely to cause 'serotonin syndrome' than a hypertensive crisis. But who knows? I have not seen anyone else on this forum who takes wellbutrin with Parnate so I would check this out carefully with a knowledgable physician. You seem in a hurry to try a lot of things, as you indicated in an earlier posting. Can you get some counseling about this. It sounds like you need some support to focus on other issues besides your meds, while giving the meds time to work.
Our meds will do whatever they will do, but they are not the be all and end all. Beyond the meds we need to focus on real life issues. In your case you need to relax and try not to think so much about the meds. And check on the Wellbutrin Parnate thing as soon as possible.
Rick

If I saw this (below from a website), I would not want to be taking a high dose of Parnate along with Wellbutrin, without very close medical supervision. If at all.

CONTRAINDICATED: According to the manufacturer, the acute toxicity of bupropion may be potentiated by coadministration of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). The mechanism of interaction has not been described.

MANAGEMENT: Concurrent use of bupropion with MAOIs or other agents that possess MAOI activity (e.g., furazolidone, linezolid, procarbazine) is considered contraindicated. At least 14 days should elapse between discontinuation of MAOI therapy and initiation of treatment with bupropion

LISTEN TO THE BOARD/APOLOGY

Well, I had another hypertensive crisis (190/118) tonight and the only common thread between the 2 episodes was the 80mg of Parnate (160 total Parnate per day) I took right before the incident. My blood pressure had been low the rest of the day and I literally had not eaten anything since my protein shake that morning. I took .5mg of Ritalin about noon, but that had long since worn off. Nope, the cause has to be the high doses of Parnate. So, now is the time for my apology. I did not go back to 60 when I said I would. I used the Ritalin to control the hypotension and prevent more falls (which it did quite well) and continued my trip up in dose on the Parnate just praying that if I found a high enough dose it would get rid of what remains of my depression. Well, none of the higher doses improved over 60mg. All I got was side effects and hypertensive crises for no reason other than to just say I've tried it now and at least I know. So now I will definitely work on returning to 60mg as safely as possible. I apologize to the folks who told me to do this a couple weeks ago-- I just thought I could handle it with the Ritalin. Clearly, I could handle the lows but not the highs. You all give good advice and there's no reason I shouldn't have taken it, preventing these last 2 hypertensive crises. I will try to be a better babbler and listen better in the future. I'm also certain that I'm going to have withdrawal effects from going down in dose, so that won't be fun either. That's why I need to taper I think rather than just cold turkey down to 60 from 160. But, I will be at 60 very soon. Please understand that I do listen to you and value your opinions greatly-- I just was stubborn in this instance and ignored what the people I really respect were telling me. I apologize. It won't happen again.

I don't think you needed to apologize. People will just be glad that you are ok. This reminds me of how depression causes excessive guilt.

InanimatePeanut,

Please, as someone who has suffered hypertensive crisis with Nardil (through cheese), I implore you to not "f" with high blood pressure. It is deadly. My doctors have told me they would not add Wellbutrin due to the potential for HBP (of course, it is a calculated risk). Furthermore, find out what is in your protein shake. There are all sorts of ingredients in those shakes. Things as seemingly innocuous as soy/tofu could trigger hypertensive crisis.

Also, I keep a drug called Nifedipine with me. In the event of hypertensive crisis, I bite into one and swallow it. It lowers the BP.

Also, in my case, the cheese causing hypertensive crisis was not an immediate reaction. It took an hour or two before I started feeling the severe headache.

Be well,

Atypical

> My blood pressure went up to 244/102 last night. I almost had to go to the ER (I refused treatment with the ambulance). It stayed up at around 185/107 for a long time. I have no idea what caused this. The only things I ate were ice cream and cake at a friend's house. Earlier in the day I had had my protein shake. I had nothing else for the day. I took my regular meds except added Wellbutrin. I took the Wellbutrin this morning as well and my bp stayed down at normal levels (below normal actually). Anyway, it was really scary and I wish I knew what caused it so I wouldn't do it again. Has this ever happened to any of you? Seemingly spontaneous spikes in BP? What do you think caused it?

Like the others, I'm mostly just glad you're OK. Please try not to feel too guilty about it. What's done is done and you've learned from it. Now you're back on track and that's what matters. Just please try to be safe in the future. Don't forget we all care about you.

I honestly don't even know if I need more than 60mg. I never had any improvement at any of the higher doses. I just kept thinking I would get some improvement if I kept going higher. All I got was intensified side effects! I'm going to go back down more slowly so I'll be able to see if I get worse along the way, but there was never a point where I was like "wow, I feel better."

Well, I had to get out of the high zone pretty fast considering the consequences. So, I dropped to 120 yesterday and then 100 today. 100 is a safer dose so I'll keep it there a few days to let my body get stabilized, then go to 90 for a few days, then 80, etc. I actually plan to go back to 60 unless there's a point in between where I start to feel worse. I figure there's no use being on more of it than I need. I was in a hurry going up because I just kept hoping that the next dose would be the one that would make me feel better-- but, alas... Anyway, I don't have the same sense of urgency driving me down quickly, and I think my poor body's been through enough.
