jeez--more questions about parnate

Posted by floatingbridge on January 12, 2010, at 15:26:22

Hi all, I'm on another info gathering mission.

Anyone experience brain fog on parnate?
(I do from ssri, snri. )

Has anyone felt 'drugged'? (Rather subjective, I know.)

For those unfamiliar w/ me, crushing fatigue is a primary symptom (of what I've yet to discover--my pdoc says repression--yikes.)

Anyone familiar, well honest, yet kind opinions are most welcome.

Thanks for reading this--I need to know the above about parnate.

My brain fog and fatigue were overwhelming at times until I started on a mood stablizer(lamictal), otherwise I get fatigued with my monthly cycle. Nothing too severe.

I've had no side effects from parnate except for occasional hypotension. Very occasional.

I've only been on Parnate for a little over a month (10mg for a month, 20 since two days ago). I also take Lithium (600mg) and Lamictal (150mg) but I've taken those before and was on them prior.

My biggest side effect so far w/ Parnate seems to be the fatigue you mention. I think that's why you're supposed to split the dosages during the day. When I get to a higher dose I'll probably take it 3 times a day to prevent fatigue. I believe it's an amphetamine derivative but it has a short half life (a little over 2 hours).

Are you taking it all at once or splitting the dose across the day?

As for brain fog I dunno - I've been on so many different meds the last 3 years I don't even know if I'd recognize brain fog ;-)

Good luck hope it works for both us....

-Jay

hey fb,

don't take this as gospel by any means (my trial was rather brief), but the side-effects were very dose-dependent for me.

10mg = pleasant buzz, improved concentration and energy, sleep fine

20mg = anxious, difficulty moving (hard to explain, but i just couldn't leave the couch)

30mg+ = anxiolytic, and a lot cleaner (maybe metabolically?) than the other drugs i've been on.

unfortunately, it made sleeping impossible, and i feel like the numerous aids i had to resort to (benzo's, AP's, etc.) counteracted any brain-fog-lifting benefits the drug might've possessed. i think as long as you have a doc who's willing to experiment with doses, and attend to the insomnia, it could definitely be worth a shot.

Jay, thanks for your response and experience --I'm glad it's working for you and hope you feeling good continues.

I'm not taking parnate--pristiq, dexedrine, and Xanax. I want to avoid jumping from a frying pan into a fire, ESP with the washout required. I sometimes form unrealistic expectations.

Yes, good luck to you, too!

You sound very stable--glad to hear it's working for you,

The second time I tried parnate I didn't get the stim ritalin effect after each dose. Also did not get insomnia accept for a few days. I also did not get the fatigue as I felt the first trial. I think everytime you try the same drug you may get different results because your brain chemistry may be different.

I also get a kindof happy buzzed feeling on neurontin 800 mg 3 times a day. Has been my mainstay drug for about 6 months.

When I tried using parnate and adding the neurontin they seemed to cancel each other out so for right now I'm sticking with the neurontin because it gives me a nice happy feeling and I become more sociable.

Maybe after the winter I might give parnate a shot by itself. problem is in the winter I get colds and can't use any of the cold meds with the parnate.

In spite of some the failures you read about parnate in babble in the real world it has a high success rate for those that can tolerate it. I haven't found the sides that bad when i tried it. Seems more calming after a while than the ssris and less hormonal disruption because it works on all the neurotransmiters.

Hi bulldog, nice to see you. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

So you felt pretty clear-headed on parnate it sounds. Good. And neurontin has got you in a comfort zone? I'm curious as to why you'd switch to parnate in the spring.

Take care,

I don't think I get any brain fog from Parnate at all (up to 160mg). I actually find it quite stimulating and don't usually get any fatigue from it either. I get insomnia and have to take seroquel and ambien at night to sleep. My other side effects are acne and hypotension. I split my dose into twice a day-- first thing in the morning and then about 4 hours before bed.

I take 30mg and have since August -- five months. I was depression free after 48 hours on parnate.

Hi PJ, oh, I have no idea. I realize I have little idea what parnate actually feels, that maybe I'll feel as foggy and drugged as. I do on almost every med I've tried.

And therapy? I'm having a crisis of faith. Sigh. Dig up one sh*t pile, find a land mine; then find another pile. Like trying to organic farm in Chernobyl.

I'll stop whining and sign off as,

Eeyore

Hugs and love, PJ. Thanks for asking!

Hi FB

Parnate never made me tired in the day. At night, it would give me very bad insomnia as you will remember. I used to take something to help me sleep but I guess everything has balanced in my body and I no longer take a sleep aid.

What I like about Parnate is that it allow me to feel. I get sometimes and cry, I can happy or angry. On other meds I was just numb, unable to experience any emotion.

I'm on 80 mg and I think I might need a higher dose. My depression is coming back and it has been a few weeks now that I haven't been feeling as well as I did before. I am going to email my pdoc for his opinion.

The diatary restriction don't bother me becuse most of the stuff I wouldn't eat anyway except for cheese. I LOVE my cheese. So I eat cheese and haven't had a reaction yet.

I've combined the 80 mg of Parnate with 75 mg of Nortriptyline and two go every well together.

I would rate Parnate as an A1 med. Best of luck to you!

Hi Maxime,

That's good to know about the emotional blunting. So just parnate for you, no add-on? Would you try the nortriptelyne again?

I hope your pdoc gets back to you asap. I'm sorry your mood has been down.

Thanks and hugs,

fb

Oh yes, I am still taking the Nortryptaline. :)

I am hoping that my doctor will let me go up to 100 mg of Parnate. We shall see.
