Oral Selegine

Posted by annabamma on January 9, 2010, at 1:29:55

I am currently taking 15mgs of oral selegine.I've had some real improvement, but I feel I'm not quite 'there' yet. My doctor thinks that I'm at the highest dose for depression, but I think I remember reading somewhere the the dose can be higher. Anybody know? Thanks!

I've heard of people taking up to 20 mgs. I'm surprised your doctor prescribed you oral selegeline and not Emsam. Is this your primary care doc or your psychiatrist?

you could add some phenylelalanine.

Be careful though, this combination might be stimulating.

Isn't selegiline a weaker MAOI that Parnate? If you only get partial response here would you consider a switch to Parnate?

My source contains the following sentence:

"Some experts report that effective antidepressant doses of oral selegiline are not usually achieved unless doses in the range of 2030 mg/day PO are utilized."

There is no citation.

That should say 20-30 mg/day.

Annabamma,

Are you taking this for depression only? Just curious because I'm looking for something for depression or anhedonia?

Thanks for the speedy replies!
Yes, I have tried the patch. I had to discontinue because of skin rash on application site. I tried some of the MAOIs years ago- I think Parnate was one of them. Headache, bad complexion and a gain of 20+ bloaty pounds were some of the SE I remember. Selegine is working fairly well so far. I think I need an increase. It's help me lose weight, combined with some other meds, and it gives me a bit of energy and motivation WITHOUT making my wimpy CNS too wired. Yes, I would recommend it for depression and no motivation. It's an old Parkinson's drug, but they found it helped depression in some people.
