I am bipolar II and take 600 mgs of Lithium and that's all on that front. I take Synthroid for Hashimoto (100 mgs) which makes my sleeping tricky. I have been on amitriptyline 50 mgs for a month for headache prevention and I saw no improvement at all. I have three questions. First, I gained a lot of weight since I started the TCA. However, that's also when I went from 450 mgs to 600 mgs of Lithium, same day. Who's the likely culprit? Second, could my taking a lot of pain killers when I have migraines, including narcs, have defeated the prophylactic power of the TCA? I really can't tolerate pain and need a prophy that make me not have to resort to thinking of pain killers. Third, I am now contemplating Topamax for the migraine prophylaxis. I'd like to try and stay at a low dose, as I heard it worked for some people at as low as 25 mgs. How long should I wait at 25 mgs to gauge if the prophylactic qualities should have kicked in?

Since also have hasimotos wondering if connection. I know it sounds silly but I have totally different diagnosis and problems but seems the synthroid creates mine. I did take nortriptalline l0mg once and couldn't wake up with benzos prescribed. Was fine til hasimotos. Did you have bipolar before or after diagnosed with hasimotos as I find a big connection with thyroid and psych disorders. Sorry I didn't really answer your question. Hoping others do. Phillipa

Phillipa Dear - I'm sorry but I'm not sure I understand your post. What connection are you talking about? And you speak of Nortriptyline and benzos in the same sentence. Which Benzo?
As for what I gathered you asked, I had Hashimoto after I was diagnosed with Bipolar. In fact, when I was diagnosed and started on Lithium, my thyroid problems started. But, of course, I could have been bipolar and not diagnosed for a long time. Also, I could have had Hashimoto and not diagnosed for a long time...
This is the end of the thread.
