Hi. I take Parnate 20mg (sensitive to meds), ritalin, diazepam, and sometimes gabapentin.
Sometimes alcohol gives a nice little buzz and helps me be more free and social (and helping low sex drive a little). But I been noticing that the buzz is hard to achieve and it takes a decent amount of vodka or white wine to get me to such a state. And I never feel drunk, which I consider a good thing.
I noticed on new years eve when I drank 2 beers though I was in a very good mood and this was right after taking my 4pm Parnate dose.
Is it particular drinks that give more of the buzz than others when on an MAOI like Parnate? If so what should I look for? I'm not some alcoholic but it helps to be more social when required. It would be nice to finally go to a club with a friend after ages of not ever going to such places.

Im not sure if your expecting us to contribute to either the ....how can i drink.....or how can i get a buzzz.
If youre not i apologize as i read the post wrong,if so however ir ur on parnate u cant drink!
That is made clearest of all things,u can be a light drinker, social drinker etc.I had to due without myself,as many users also im sure did.If youre drinking even semi daily on parnate,i know you feel right now ,"this guy dont know,i do it often" but i promise your playing with fire.
Now if your looking for a pro social effect, then there are some options, gabpentin, klonopin, modafinil togther would be one,i personaly came across a med campral ive been touting and have been prob notable from my increase in posts very socialy enhanced.
I just hope ur not drinking on parnate,u have no idea what danger ur tip toeing around.

I have actually been socially drinking (not a lot either) on the Parnate. Bottled beer especially worked surprisingly well in making me very social and even uplifted with no increase to my heart rate such as when I ate a certain chocolate with soy near the top of the ingredients.
My doctor has told me that the only alcohol I should really avoid is red wine and tap beer since me and him discussed drinking in regards to social occassions. Maybe it's because I'm on low dose Parnate 20mg?
Perhaps alcohol effects some on Parnate in an absolutely horrendous manner but so far has not been the case for me.
Though I will try to drink bit less often and see how it goes. If social ability improves perhaps I'll ditch any social drinking all together.
I have a lot of trouble being social on any consistent basis.

You might be unnecessarily alarming MAOI users. If you cared to read up on MAOIs, alcohol is not contraindicated. Sure, drinking whilst on any anti-depressant is counter-productive since alcohol is a depressant but it is not necessarily dangerous at all.
You should definitely avoid draught beer - that really is risky, especially microbrewery beer. One or two pints could indeed cause a hypertensive crisis. Just the same as strong cheese.
However moderate amounts of white wine, bottled/canned beer and others are all perfectly safe on MAOIs. Most PDoc's and experienced MAOI users who like to drink will all say the same thing. Even this website has (outdated) information that concurs: http://www.dr-bob.org/tips/maoi.html
Get your facts straight.

Well thats what board is for, instead of spending the enrgy telling me this, perhaps it would have been more productive to tell him this as well as adressing his question,
Were you even concerned with his actual question,or more concerned at proving me wrong?

sorry, what is this board for?

I don't follow. He can also read my post and probably has. He may agree, he may not. Tell him what as well?
> Were you even concerned with his actual question,or more concerned at proving me wrong?
I was not addressing the original question, I was hopefully highlighting to any interested parties that your advice was completely wrong. I think incorrect advice, especially when it's full of scaremongering on a site with potentially loads of inexperienced MAOI users is worth challenging. Do you disagree?
FWIW I take Nardil and find it hard to feel a buzz on booze. My faculties get impaired as usual but I don't get much of a vibe off it. Which is OK with me since I generally feel more depressed the following days after boozing anyway.

ty for the response. i am glad to know that drinking once in a while is unlikely to be harmful if done responsibly.
I notice no ''depressing'' feeling after drinking though. The improved socialness just goes away and I seem to return back to how I was. Strange.
The only things I have drank to anyone wondering are Keith's bottled beer. White wine. And vodka.

Look this is the last im gonna post about this.I state many times i can only post my opinion and what ive read.
My opinion is at least for me having had a interaction i just avoid achlolol. As far as data im sure you know basic data says to avoid acholol.
However i never looked into it in detail, same way
max doses have more when looked into in detail.I offered a suggestion of what could give a pro social effect with parnate as beer would.
So i was not fully inofrmed as to the types of alcholol allowed, well that gave you the perfect opppurnity to chime in and post to him i wasnt correct and then proceed to your post.
Here both him and i would have learned something.Instead you post to me,which isnt a problem except for your last comment, also your tone of the post.
Regardless i offered some info on parnate and a beer social like effect which can be achieved with certain meds,if the worst i did was get info on aclholol incorrect i dont see at is such a big deal.
Rather then to post to him to inform him,one can only conclude that your post to me instead was to claim i misinform.
Also you post my orignal posting and break it apart, this board is full of my recent postings of maoi info, info which is correct. Therefore im insulted that you sought out to prove im uninformed about maois,if this is so,id recomend you respond to my other posts and do the same which is correct my misinfo because if im posting wrong information on maois then i wanna be the first to have it corrected.Im taking a guess however this wont be the case.
Your last line is the one that i feel as an attack, you stated get my facts straight?
On the numerous posts above i never post info that i dont have a link to.Claiming i should get my facts straight was a low blow when i have posted tons of info that i challenge you to include to that statment.
Last if you are going to paste my post to tear it down, include it all, including the correct facts, dont paste what is only convieant for you.I might also get blocked for this but......um who are you now?
Try pulling that act on my many other posts and see how far you get,im sorry i wasnt fully informed on someone who wanted to know how they can get buzzed on drinks with their maoi, and with no sarcism admitt i had no business in this post.
