Hey guys, sorry for the vague title, but my question was a bit complicated to place in the Subject bar!
I have recently been placed on Seroquel for... well, pretty much every symptom there is - depression, anger (occasional, mind), anxiety... lots of stuff. I have had quite a wide experience with SSRIs, even Mirtazapine, Lofepramine and my beloved Tranylcypromine.
But now I'm on Seroquel - the thing is, it's really too sedating for me to take daytime. I'd like to try a less sedating antipsychotic, BUT I don't know whether the calming effect is caused by the anti-histamine sedation, or the dopamine-blocking. See, I don't want to go on a non-sedating antipsychotic only to find it was the sedation that was what was helping! Not that it does much... but at least I can sleep at night.
And of course I don't want to only be able to 'function' when I'm shattered from Seroquel.
I'm going to ask my psychiatrist this, of course, but he's on holiday, and I'd like to hear your thoughts : )

What dosage are you taking? I used Seroquel for anxiety and was on 200 mg a day and it didn't sedate. It's one of those meds that are more sedating at the lower dosages. Maybe you need to increase the dosage.

I've never taken seroquel, but have tried all the others (Atypical), and perphenazine. I think its the sedation that helps anxiety. I took Abilify which is not sedating and is realy energizing. It had my anxiety sky high. Geodon didn't help and was not sedating to me. I do now take zyprexa and perphenazine which are nicely sedating. I here that seroquel is more sedating that zyprexa. Zyprexa is the one that works best for my anxiety. Perphenazine helps too. I took remeron, which was very setating to me and did not help my anxiety. So it must be something else with the antipsychotics along with the sedation. I took risperdal too, which had me stuck in the house afraid to go out for any thing. But they gave me zyprexa and every thing was instantly better. I'm also psychotic(or atleast I was), and may be why the antipsychotics work. I know some one who took seroquel and it was realy good for anxiety. I think the trick with seroquel is to take a small dose in morning and a large dose at night.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses! I was away from the internet, only just got back.
Yeah, I'm on 25mg b.i.d, so in theory I can take it during the day, but in reality, I always take 50mg at night.
I don't want to be calmed down only because I'm unpleasantly sedated : /
But on the other hand, what I'm trying to work out is whether the sedation IS the anxioltyic function, or the anti-psychotic part. That is - if the sedation is doing all the work, there'd be no point switching to a non sedating antipsychotic : )
This is the end of the thread.
