Hi
Parnate is giving me really bad acne. I use Differin lotion which is a prescription cream. I was just wondering what other prescription creams are out there and how well do they work.
Anyone?

Maxie if acne may sound dumb but clearasil on an occasional pimple dries it out quickly. Maybe a bit of cortisone cream? Phillipa

Cortisone cream is a good idea. Thank you! Clearasil drys my face out too much and the pimples I have are like a rash so I would have put it all over my face and it would dry it out and cause more problems. Sigh. Adult acne isn't fun.

Azelaic acid 20% (brand name Azelex) ;-)
Extremely underrated, vastly underused, very effective! My derm. friend recommended it when I had a breakout of mysterious origin.
Stings like crazy the first few times you use it though.

No, it's real acne. I used to suffer from it in my 20s and went on tetracycline to get rid of it. It looks exactly same as it did then. Ugly.

I have acne from the Parnate too-- isn't it so frustrating to have acne as an adult?!

It's very frustrating. And you can't use products that are made for teens or else you will dry out your face!

Can you take tetracycline with the parnate? Phillipa

I am not sure if I can take tetracycline with Parnate. I asked my PDOC and he wasn't sure either. Anyway, I don't think my doctor would prescribe because of the nature of the acne. There is no pus (sorry TMI), just big red bumps. If I had the money I would try Proactiv. But I don't. I am expecting my period so the acne is worse than ever right now.

I'm on Yasmin (and I was before I started Parnate). It helps with the acne (but doesn't completely keep it away). I don't think birth control pills interfere with Parnate. I swear, I sometimes feel like because we're on Parnate we have to ask "can I sneeze on Parnate? Is it ok if I take a walk on Parnate?" It's darn annoying to have to ask if everything is ok to do on Parnate!!!

If the med is not used properly or safely serious things can happen it's not a med to play with. Please be careful. Phillipa

I have used retin-a creme--the gel was too drying. The cortisone creme suggested sounds good. Sorry, Maxine--acne is no fun. At least you are feeling good!

The problem is that MAOI warnings are all over the place on medications that are quite safe in combination--mostly just to avoid lawsuits than as a result of actual research. MAOIs (and MAOI copharmacy) can and has helped a lot of people but many people are afraid to use them because of the fear-mongering that has been going on since Libby Zion. Yes, they can be dangerous, but I think the best way to avoid complications is through patient education. To the above poster, I'd say this combo is a bad idea.. but I'm glad s/he asked it, how else would they have known?
I feel weird writing this post, I guess your reply just hit a nerve. Please don't take it personally.

It's a huge mistake to experiment without enough information and experience with these drugs-- and yes, parnate can be dangerous if not given enough respect and used cautiously--
This is not a matter of whether it annoys us to have to be careful. It's the fact that if you take on the responsibility of taking this med, you have that responsibility-- to be knowledgeable, to consult your pdoc, to act carefully and only with caution in adding various substances to it.
It does in fact interact badly with other drugs-- including some that are available over the counter and that "seem" perfectly harmless. Claims that it's all just hype --which leads people possibly to act without thinking it through---are themselves frightening.

I respectfully disagree with your last point; it's similar to the anti-drug campaigns in America: once people realize that certain dangers are overstated, they begin to ignore precautions which actually have bases in fact. E.g., someone realizing that mozzarella on a pizza isn't going to cause a hypertensive crisis may later eat a large amount of Stilton without thinking twice because they've been told that cheese=death without any explanation why.
I believe this was Elizabeth's aim when creating the updated MAOI list that's linked on the main page here: to provide solid data so that when people taking MAOIs experiment with proscribed substances (which is inevitable) they don't make a life-threatening error.
I certainly didn't claim that it's all hype, I just think explanations backed up by actual research are more constructive, educational and, indeed, life-saving than what seem to be "abstinence-only" warnings.

OK, so this was bad timing with me complaining about Parnate in combo to my other post going on at the same time. First of all, I'm not encouraging people not to ask here or talk to their doc about med combos; I was just pointing out how frustrated I was at the time that you say MAOI and suddenly no one will even sell you a bottled water. I follow the diet perfectly. I check everything I want to take either through this board or through my doc. I'm not saying not to. I'm just saying that people are so scared even hearing the word MAOI that it gets frustrating.
Masime- I would at least check with you doctor about tetracycline. As I said, I've been on Yasmin the whole time I've been taking Parnate and have been fine. You might try Yasmin-- it really helped for me when I had acne from some meds in the past (and I have just a little acne with Parnate now).

My doctor won't prescribe Yasmin for me because I am over 35 years old with a history of headaches. Thanks for the advice though.
This is the end of the thread.
