EMSAM patch 9 mg/24 hr experiences

Posted by em_kath on December 16, 2009, at 16:47:57

Hi, I am new to this board and I just started the Emsam patch at the 9 mg/24 hr dose. I had previously been on the 6 mg/24 hr dose for approximately 2 weeks. What I am wondering is how much I really need to worry about the dietary restrictions on this dose of the patch. I do plan to follow the low-tyramine diet of course, but I heard that there has never been a reported case of hypertensive crisis on the patch and that the diet is just a precaution. During my research I have come across quite a bit of conflicting information. I am anxious about accidentally consuming something I shouldn't and I am just wondering if any of you have actually had a problem with hypertensive crisis on Emsam, just to hopefully ease my mind. Thank you!

Hi,

Welcome to psychobabble. I am also on the 9mg Emsam patch and have not had any problems with hypertension. My doctor told me that it is more a preacautionary measure since there have been no reported cases or at least she has never had one and she has quite a few patients on Emsam.
She also said that the warning applies more to the consumption of large amounts of tyramine rich foods or products. More like an entire block of blue cheese.
Good luck.

Good, I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any issues, I was a bit worried. Thank you!
