The benzodiazepines give me significant relief from GAD and insomnia. But which of the above are less likely to get me addicted?
Important background: I'm an alcoholic who quit drinking 14 years ago at age 30. My Dx is major depression, GAD and ADHD.
Ativan works fast; Xanax takes longer and seems to be stronger, but also seems to be making me real tired the next day. (Also taking Cymbalta 15 mgs; Wellbutrin XR 150 mgs; Dexedrine XR 30 mgs; Ambien 10 mgs.)

I've been on both and I think ativan is more addictive. It gives me more of a euphoria than xanax. Individual differences in genetics could be the determining factor, though.

My pdoc would say Xanax is more addictive. I have heard him say in an offhand way that he has stopped prescribing Xanax because he believes it is too addictive. Generic Ativan (lorazepam) is the main benzo he prescribes. Lorazepam really did nothing for my anxiety. The only thing I could notice was some increased tiredness, when fatigue was already a main problem of mine. I have not tried Xanax or any other benzo aside from the lorazepam. A beta blocker (nebivolol/Bystolic) and perphenazine (an old-time antipsychotic) are what are helping my anxiety currently.

As a recovering alcoholic, you should probably stay away from benzos. They may weaken your defenses against taking a drink, and many would consider them "cheating."
Most professionals would say Xanax is more addictive, but your own experience may be different. Have you tried/thought of Klonopin? It is probably less addictive than either, because it lasts longer. I took it for over a year and stopped with no problems.
