I have become absolutely terrified about side effects from medication. When I was younger I would take about any pill (prescripted), but now I don't know how I would get started with Concerta or Abilify as augmentors. I seem to focus on s/e and not on potential benefits.
This is a major drawback of knowing too much about pharmacology. With Abilify I'm certain that I would end up with either TD or NMS or both. Are my fears justified? I have combining conventional ADs back and forth for years but they don't carry the same risks./tensor

I think you need to get beyond your fears even though I know how terribly difficult it is. If you start a new med and have a bad reaction you can just stop the med. If you don't try the med you will never know what you were missing.
Go for it!

Tensor--drug trials are the worst. They can be very anxiety provoking. Having tried Abilify (and failed), I'd just say, start low and be vigilant. (I developed no lasting side effects.) Stay in touch with your doctor. Do you keep a med journal of your trial lengths and doses (and SE's)?
And Concerta--I don't know much about possible side effects. Are they serious?
best luck and courage to you,

No I don't keep a med journal, I wish I did. Anyway, it's not the common side effects that scares me, it's those rare potential fatal reactions that scares me. NMS is actually listed for Concerta, but that has to be so rare that even I can chill about it.

>Being obsessed with the worst-case scenario is a symptom of depression. Try to put it out of your mind long enough for the med to work, and then the fear will go away.
I, too, was afraid of Abilify before I took it. But I am taking a tiny amount (2mg) compared to what schizophrenics take. The largest pill is 30mg! Your chances of getting Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome are virtually nil.

"The risk of aripiprazole to induce extrapyramidal motor side effects appears comparable to that of placebo and much lower than that of haloperidol, although akathisia may increase during aripiprazole treatment (Marder et al. 2003). Apart from the occasional induction of akathisia, aripiprazole has a markedly good safety and tolerability profile, especially with regard to weight, prolactin, QTc interval changes, glucose and lipid metabolism (Fleischhacker 2005)."
