Parnate aggression

Posted by g_g_g_unit on October 8, 2009, at 20:58:32

I've been feeling really aggressive on Parnate lately, especially in the early afternoon. I'd rather not tell my doctor just yet because I don't want him taking me off it. I'm not in any danger of acting on the aggression; it's more of an internal tension. Is this normal?I also take imovane to sleep so was wondering if it could be next-day withdrawal from that. Thanks

Could it be anxiety? Akethesia? Phillipa

Yeah, sounds like akathisia.

You usually get it starting an SSRI or from a drug with D2 antagonist effects.

oh, i thought akathisia was a 'restlessness' that didn't necessarily have an emotional component. if i wake up too early after taking Seroquel (which is a D2 antagonist?), i feel super restless and just move about quickly from task to task with no real control over my actions. the aggression i feel on Parnate is different - there's no real psychomotor component; it's more of a frustration where i get really angry over the slightest things going wrong

actually, akathisia sounds partly right, though i was also experiencing something similar before starting the Parnate - restlessness, tics, addictive behaviours. the aggression is new though, and doesn't always accompany the restlessness; it mainly hits me in the afternoon.

if it is akathisia will it probably pass? i'll try upping my N-Acetyl-Cysteine dose in the meantime. i also wonder if there's a link between the akathisia and the fact that i am so prone to experiencing restless leg syndrome on AD's.

man i am sick of drugs. i tried nicotine gum for SA the other day and, despite my hope that it would stimulate me, it proved to be an amazing anxiolytic. maybe i should just take up smoking instead.

It's quite likely your side effects comes from Parnate.

MAOA-knockout mice show more aggression compared to normal mice.

Brunner syndrome (mutation in the MAOA gene) causes impulsive/aggressive behaviour.

Funny you say that. I just started 8 days ago and have become aggressive. Not restless or anything but just highly impatient, rude and very opinionated. I haven't mentioned it to my pdoc or admitted it to my parents (who keep saying I am behaving 'angry' ) because I prefer being like this than being a dead-duck/ zombie. I have read that it happens when you start Parnate which is why my doctor is titrating me up very slowly.
How long have you been on it? Have you recently started or upped the dose?
Anyway, in my case it is 100% the Parnate.
Take care and keep us updated
Love

Just started the Parnate yesterday and I am hoping that it will HELP me with agression. With this bout of depression I have so much ANGER. I am so ANGRY that I have been cursed with this illness and I take it out on the people around me. I hope it goes away soon.

That makes sense. I was more aggressive on nardil too, but also more euphoric. The restlessness does feel more like akathisia though. I've had it ever since coming off nardil. I guess the parnate aggression makes me less tolerant

Sort of. I had the aggression at 20mg, then it stopped when I went to 30mg. I was going to taper off and wentbavk down to 20mg, then changed my mind and raised it back to 30mg a week ago. I think I've been on it for 4 weeks total. Please excuse the mistakes, I'm writing this on an iPhone

I do recall reading that many people become angry and irritable as their depression starts to lift - it can be a sign you're going into remission.

Certainly I've often gone through a period of inner irritation and aggression as I've started on the road to recovery.

Hopefully it'll be a transient thing.

thanks. on Nardil it felt like a positive sign, though i never remained long enough on the drug to achieve remission. what's more annoying is the psychomotor component - just flitting aimlessly between minor tasks. it's impossible to keep my attention fixed.
