Lamictal:How long?

Posted by zana on October 1, 2009, at 16:22:36

My pdoc just started me on Lamictal. He said it would take "some time" to be effective and that I might experience some jitteryness and anxiety "at first." Anyone have a better idea of how long it takes to kick in and how long the initial jitters might last?
Thanks for any thoughts.

Zana, the only info I have to pass along is that a friend does very well on it (for her BP II). I don't remember the details (sorry). She had to start slowly, and it did take a while to reach effectiveness. Don't know what her therapeutic dose is--maybe higher than yours (I'm guessing). Did cause some jitteriness in the beginning, but that resolved.

Good Luck!

Hi Zana,

You should feel benefits when you get to the 100mg dose. I also had a little anxiety/restless feelings when I started it, but not even close to how bad starting an SSRI feels for me.

100mg was great for depression and I actually stayed on that dose for about 9 months. I then had a bad hypomanic episode that wouldn't go away, so dose was increased to 200mg. I have been at this dose for almost 2 years.

Can I ask what other meds you are taking with the Lamictal?

lamictal never gave me jitters at all. But because titration is really slow you may not see a full effect till you reach optimal dose (200mg in my case) But I do have to say I felt better in a couple of weeks.
Hope it works well for you. It is a great drug
