Salt for MAOI hypotension - any success?

Posted by pedr on October 3, 2009, at 13:41:22

Hi,
I know from 100's of PB posts that doctors recommend lots of water and higher levels of salt for MAOI. However I've not seen any posts saying that it actually works or even helps.

Has anyone found that it helps in any way?

Pete

oops - forgot to ask - does the salt level build up on a day-by-day basis? Would downing a teaspoon of salt before playing soccer help?

Thanks.

salt i don't think so, but the renin/angiotensis changes might persist a bit longer, not sure though. definatly drink lots of salty stuff right before/during exercise. probably avoid eating; blood to your gut will worsen things.

do you notice any s/e related to cholinergic function like saliva or urination, changes?

if it doesn't improve, perhaps a beta blocker might be helpful (or not helpful, they lower BP overall. but alpha agonis is what is important, and unlike most things your doctor won't think its going to cause hypertension)

NSAIDs would be good, i think (everyday, building effect)

are MAOI's anti-cholinergic?

I didn't have any luck with salt, it didn't make any difference to my BP. I was taking 500mg tablets, i tried 3 at a time but still no luck and it made my stomach hurt which wasn't fun.

choline (m receptors) and adrenoceptors play opposing roles (parasympathetic/sympathetic, respectivly) so by changing adrenaline/noradrenaline function (also trace amines) you can have effects that look like cholinergic/anticholinergic effects.

sorry - which bit don't you think so?

good shout, I am reading up on this stuff on Wiki, very interesting.

Will try that.

From the Nardil? Yes but only very mild compared to other meds I've been on. It's a very odd one - during the night I get up to pee about 6 times. Most strange.

so NSAIDs raise blood pressure? through altering renal function?

I gave it a go and played soccer yesterday. Before playing I:
- drank 2 strong cups of tea (caffeine)
- drank 1 litre of water
- drank 0.5 litres of salt water (1 tsp salt)

and it worked a treat! It could have been another factor or just dumb luck but I could play and was the happiest man alive. OK, I was still a little wobbly and dizzy now and again but overall I could play. Brilliant. I am playing again tonight possibly so I will repeat the preparation and see how it goes.

Cheers,
Pete
