Ativan-how much is too much?

Posted by Rauter on October 3, 2009, at 8:16:20

I mix my Lyrica 600mg with Ativan 4 mg. (2mg bid)

I used to take a lot of psychiatric medicines in the past. Including the notorious SSRIs. To be frank, I havent left any of SSRIs untouched. The best of them being Zoloft 150mg. I enjoyed the good effects for a good three years but being totally dysfunctional in the sexual department.

Since I said good bye to SSRIs, I think my sexuality has been restored to some extent. Glad my current cocktail (Lyrica and Ativan) does not have deleterious sexual effects on me.

But isnt my taking of these two addictive meds too much? I am not fancying of a life without the help of chemicals. But will these meds betray me after sometimes so that I will have to increase the dose again and again thus reaching a dangerous zone?

Sorry, one of the side effects of Lyrica is difficulty in finding words. This adverse effect should have reflected in my post too.

I just know from my own experience that after 40 years of benzos I don't need more but they just don't work anymore. No more relaxation just keep me out of withdrawal and the lower I go the more tired I am. If your're young I'm sure something better will turn up soon. What do you take the meds for anxiety me also. But totally hooked on 50mg of luvox. Wothless at this point too. Phillipa

How long have you been taking benzo's?

After about eight months of chronic use, physical dependence will be firmly established. The higher the dose and the longer you take it, the more dependent you become.

Ativan has a relatively short half-life, which can make withdrawal worse.

If you think it helps you in an essential way, you might consider taking it for the rest of your life.

If you don't want lifelong dependence, on the other hand, you may consider switching to a longer acting benzo like diazepam (Valium) or clonazepam (Klonopin), and then slowly taper off.

Lyrica, for all I know, is less problematic in the dependence area. You can't stop taking it at once, since that may result in rebound convulsions, but when you taper it down slowly there shouldn't be any serious problems.

Wouldn't the Lyrica be taking care of your anxiety well enough on its own? From what I've heard Lyrica is the bomb for anxiety.

I've successfully switched to xanax xr (generic) after a few years on klonopin. Klonopin brought me down. Feel much better. 1mg lasts all day.
