How does Abilify augment antidepressants?

Posted by number42 on September 30, 2009, at 12:00:32

I recently added Abilify 20 mgs. to 80 mgs. of Prozac and i am doing so much better. Anyone familiar with how an anti-psychotic enhances an AD?

#42

P.S. My diagnosis is bipolar 2, i also take 200 mgs. of Lamictal daily.

With Abilify, there are probably at least three mechanisms involved:

1. Dopamine D2 and D3 receptor partial agonism.

2. Serotonin 5-HT2a receptor antagonism.

3. Serotonin 5-HT1a receptor partial agonism.

The net effect here is to increase dopamine and serotonin activity.

Linkadge could probably add some insight into what are the downstream effects of these events.
