Tryciclic + itchy skin

Posted by alchemy on September 20, 2009, at 9:50:46

I've been on Desipramine for a few weeks and now have itchy skin that turns into a rash if I scratch it. Any ideas on whether or not this side effect will fade?

Sounds like an allergic reaction? Phillipa ps I'd ask my doc at least report it to him.

I am very familiar with this side effect. It probably has to do with NE activity. Do you find that when you scratch one spot that another spot begins to itch immediately afterwards?

Hint: try not to scratch. It only makes things worse. If this occurs after a shower, try not to wipe yourself with a towel. It is better if you gently dab your skin dry. Then, try to get some clothes on as soon as possible. The light contact of clothes seems to reduce the itchiness. Do not take overly hot showers.

I found that this side effect lingered for quite awhile before finally receding.

Thanks Scott. I still have the itchy/rash skin and it is worse in the middle of the night probably because I take it at night.
I did take a hot shower the first day and scratched like crazy, ending up with some ugly marks.
You said it lingered for a while? Would you say for over a month?

Thanks.

The first time I took a tricyclic, it did last for over a month, but not much longer than that. It grows less intense over time. It sucks, but I believe it is worth persevering through if you are responding well to the drug.
