I've been on the 6 mg. Emsam patch for about 5 weeks-last night a had a mild headache I couldn't get rid of-this morning when i went to the doc. my b.bp. was 148/104!!!!! The patch has caused some anxiety =heart rate to go up-which I control with a little beta-blocker- but my blood pressure has so far been okay.So what's going on with this sudden spike? I didn't eat anything 'forbidden'!!! Haven't some people posted that their anxiety DEcreases with dose increases? I'll be going up to 9mg. soon- but am worried about this blood pressure issue! Thanks to all-

What did you eat, drink, or take as a medication prior to the hypertensive event? I know you said that you did not take anything that appears on the forbidden lists you are using, but I'm curious if anything else emerges as being suspicious.
So far, I haven't heard of people having dangerous spontaneous hypertensive episodes with Emsam in the same way as sometimes occurs with Parnate. However, hypertension is listed as a frequent side effect of Emsam. This is an effect separate from the tyramine reaction. Emsam can also produce migraines.
For what it's worth, there are two Emsam (selegiline) amphetamine metabolites, but they are the wrong kind (levorotatory) to incease blood pressure.

Did they change the protocol for Emsam as thought six mg required no diet changes? As for the bp it's not that high why is it considered a hypertensive crisis? Phillipa

I didn't say it was a crisis- just worried me-as my b.p. has currently been on the lowish normal side. I didn't know b.p. increases could happen independent of the food issue! I'll have to watch it more closely.Didn't some posters say that anxiety DEcreased with an Increase in mg? on these patches? I have such a wimpy CNS! Emsam does seem to be slowly helping with the depression-and I am losing weight! Thanks for the help!

I have had the complete opposite problem on Emsam. I am having problems with extreme low blood pressure, and orthostatic hypotension. One day my BP was 80/48. Every time I get up from sitting, and especially laying down, I feel like I am going to faint; I lose vision, and I start having hearing difficulties. It is impossible to excercise; and my appetite for excessively sweet carbs has skyrocketed on Emsam. And I have also lost my libido. This is the 20th different AD I have taken in the last 6 years, and there is no hope now for getting over depression; being fat, lazy, stupid, and depressed is how I will live out the rest of my life. I need to accept that.

Wow- 20 ADs in 6 years! i've seen some other posts on here by people with the same b.p. problems- some of them take other meds to help- and ?salt? I can relate to feeling fat, stupid and hopeless-I think most of the people on this site can, at one point or another-its part of the depression-although after awhile it feels like "part" of you.I know it's hard to keep up hope, sometimes only a little 'blind faith' keeps me going...
