Wellbutrin combo

Posted by X-ray on September 2, 2009, at 12:05:09

Hi,

Now I really need a drug that will lift my mood.
I've learned that Wellbutrin might do the trick.

But I've always had a problem to sleep.
Insomnia is one possible side effect of Wellbutrin.

Which drug would be a good match with Wellbutrin as a sleep aid?

Ambien
Elavil
Lyrica
Remeron
Seroquel
trazodone
Zyprexa

There could be other drugs that would fit in a Wellbutrin combo.
I would like to hear suggestions.

Best regards,
X-ray

P.S. I'm on Elavil and Buspar, but I need a change.

I never did well with the meds your're now on so my imput at best is poor. Remeron with benzos at 15mg didn't make me at all sleepy neutral a month and stopped. Wellbutrin I appeared manic to pdoc and ended in the hospital. After only 50mg of seroquel there with benzos was taken off as almost fainted. So benzos are the only thing that works for sleep for me. Good luck in your selection. Phillipa

Hi Phillipa,

Thanks for your reply!

I agree that benzos work well for sleep.
But in the long run these drugs may be difficult to handle.

The best sleep aid I have ever been on is Rohypnol.
This drug gave me marvellous sleep 30 years ago.

However, when I felt miserable I could take Rohypnol for a nap in the afternoon.

That was the beginning to the end.
I had to come off this drug.

Best regards,
X-ray

I take 300mgs of Wellbutrin XL and at night I take 45mgs of Remeron. I also take Seroquel at night but I am pretty sure it is the remeron that is knocking me out. For me it is a great sleep aid even at higher doses which are supposed to be stimulating.

A bit like choral hydrate? Which is the very best for sleep. Phillipa

I've taken Seroquel a few times to help me sleep. Also Trazadone is a very good sleep medication. The others may or may not work. You may not have the side effect though, so why anticipate it before it happens. Worrying about a potential side effect of any medication is a sure way to self-suggest it.

I'm on Nardil and Wellbutrin and occasionally I have insomnia but not too severely. I sometimes just take Benadryl, but I have Seroquel if needed. I'm the first one to avoid taking any medication unless absolutely essential. I've had to take meds for the better part of 30 years and my philosophy is take the least amount of meds necessary since most of these meds have not been tested in combination with one another.

And obviously only take wellbutrin in the morning. I'm sure you know about that.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply!

I had a problem with drowsiness when I was on Remeron.

But I know that Wellbutrin is activating.

So maybe I won't be drowsy on a Wellbutrin-Remeron combo.

Hi,

I agree with your philosophy about drugs, but I know that I need medicine.

I will probably try both Seroquel and trazodone.

What dose do you take of Seroquel?
What dose do you take of trazodone?

Best regards,
X-ray

X-Ray,
love the name...are you in the medical field as well?

Seroquel for me is usually only a speck of a dose, like 25 mg to start. Trazadone is not something I have taken, but know its efficacy for insomnia. I would probably try Traz first, usually at 50 mg to start, as my feeling about any AP is to avoid it due to the side effects, like TD.

I just perused the package insert for Seroquel and true to form, the drug company (Astra Zeneca) tries to disguise it's clasifications. INitially it is said to be a "psychotropic" (that tells you nothing) of a "new chemical class, the dibenzothiazepines". It goes onto say Seroquel's antagonism of histamine may explain the solmnolence with this drug.

My reluctance with a drug like this is the Side effect of tardive dyskinesia, for which I have always resisted my pdocs recommendation of taking any antipsycotic (AP) including some of the ones I reluctantly agreed to take, all at very low doses.

I would opt for Traz first since the SE's are not like those of AP's.

I no longer take a med for insomnia even if I have some minor symptoms. I just "forget about it", get up and read, have a glass of wine and I eventually nod off. I work so hard during the day that the chance of insomnia lately is very low. When I wasn't working, just the lack of activity would cause insomnia. Make sure you try and get enough of a physical and mental workout every day. That is critical to mental health and you know I am a stauch advocate of avoiding any meds that are not working or causing more side effects than are beneficial. I've had enough drug induced side effects and loss of good years, so taking something like Benadryl would always be my first choice before a heavy hitter.

Hi,

I like your sound approach to drugs.
But I really need medicine every day.

I quit drugs twenty years ago.
That was a big mistake.

But that's no big deal.
Everone with type 1 diabetes needs insulin.

I know that excercise is good for depression.
I ran Marathon back in 1985.

Now I have a knee problem.
But I take a one hour walk four days a week.

I'm eager to try Wellbutrin for my mood.
This drug has insomnia as a listed side effect.

So I'm worried about that.
But I have half a bottle of Rohypnol stacked away at my sisters house.

Best regards,
X-ray

P.S. Yes, X-ray has a good ring to it. I think so too.
