Hey,
I was wondering if anyone knows if depression can be worsened by consumption of dairy.
Does anyone know?
Thanks!

yeah at least indirectly.. anything that messes with my digestion makes me more depressed.. besides too much calcium can cause mental problems (think there's documentation for this somewhere out there)..

I think unless you are dairy or lactolse intolerant or allergic, I wouldn't sweat it.

Having bad reactions to milk is not very rare. Many people have very delayed effects from drinking milk and never know about the link. I've heard about very long lasting cases of depression which were alleviated after milk was eliminated from the diet.

If there is a problem, it likely comes from metabolic difficulties with casein.

This might not be the same phenomenon that you speak of, but a single megadose of calcium will exacerbate my depression significantly within an hour. The increase in severity last for a few hours thereafter. Who would have thought?
One of my doctors theorized that the etiology of depression included an imbalance between magnesium and calcium.

What????Calcium? Ratio is 2 of calcium to l or magnesium. Have to supplement with it as arthritis and osteopororis and Vita D is fine. Tested for it. I don't get how calcium can be depressing? Phillipa

Jan,
Everyone responds differently to vitamins and meds.
All I was saying is that, for me, a calcium supplement causes depression. I do not know why. However, like Scott said, I suspect it is a Ca to Mg ratio issue.

>You have a fair set of anticonvulsants -- it is not common but postured by some that calcium supplements may possibly interfere with absorption or other functions.
That being said, its best to take calcium with food.
What is a "megadose" ?
One should only take about 500mg of calcium equivalent at a a time spread throughout the day to about 2g if you are taking the maximum one should have generally.....
....but food, if you drink milk, have certain vegetables, etc, will have some of that already....
....mainly because overdoing calcium supplements has been known to cause kidney stones in those possibly prone.
It is quite rare to have actual calcium toxicity, its quite low compared to potassium, e.g.
