I'm only on 5mg of Zyprexa and it's been helping some of my symptoms well, but I have an increase in my appetite. I'm already overweight and can't afford to gain anymore weight. I've been trying to walk everyday for exercise and eat better - more fruit, etc., but I'm always hungry - mostly for salty foods which I don't understand. Is there anything to help with the cravings?
thanks
Jerry

Well, I've found I've that I have a different 'crave' at different points in the day, so I don't think that's terribly unusual.
Its hard to curb cravings (I happen to be on Seroquel, but a set of the current atypicals have similar qualities).... basically you have to really restrict your diet.Which I'm not terribly good at...
That means the average person may typically have a 2,000 calorie diet... without psychotropics yours may vary, we all do.... its called the "maintenance calories".
That is, if you are able to eat less than your necessary input daily, you will lose daily, about 3000 calories typically to cut off a pound of fat.
Often those of us on non weight-neutral medication don't realize what we are intaking... its helpful to try to look at a day and add up the calories you're eating. Sometimes with packaged food it can be a big estimate.
There is on the USDA site about 10,000 foods and how much a typical serving is.
So it is hard, don't get me wrong... it takes discipline to cut way back... if your maintenance calories is say 2200, you probably have to accommodate whatever Zyprexa is doing, so say 1700 maybe... and stick to maintaining that.
Exercise is a good thing definitely....
If you can stand it, there are "ketogenics", but they come with their own risks... anxiety...e.g. Hoodia (the real stuff, not some shady mixture).
I tried that but it pushed my symptoms overboard.
They will all increase anxiety if that is the problem.
There have been studies e.g. Axid with I think Zyprexa... whichever was made by the same manufacturer that it helps a bit,... can't say that there was really any true conclusion other than selling Axid.I mean I tried a similar one, generic Zantac, it tends sometimes to make me slightly nauseated/not hungry.... but got used to it, doesn't really work higher.
So the answer, it can't really find itself in a bottle unless you can stand possible serious side effects, is watching intake, exercising when you can, and I dunno......at least for me, I have to be realistic that as you grow older your metabolism changes from what it was in your teen years...
...and I know there's only so much that you can get down to, if you really need to take a medication.
But that's really just a personal view, I guess its kind of a sore spot for me.

I don't know what you're taking or what your symptoms are but I am taking seroquel and remeron and provigil helps kill my appetite. I have only protein shakes during the day since I find that once I start eating it's hard to stop. At dinner I eat huge amounts of greens and I mean really huge.
The exericse is a good thing for many reasons. Fruit always makes me hungier. I think because of the sugar content. I do better with something like an almond or peanut butter sandwich.
Good luck. The weight gain is a total drag.

Zyprexa.....Blowupexa! I took Zyprexa in 2004-3?
Man i blew up, it lower's the blood sugar, by doing what it does, yet that's it's side effect from doing. Wished it was another, like wieght stablization with mood.
Anyways, yes..it makes you hungry, but diffrent people are diffrent in the effects. Don't suggest taking it with any over-appite suppressant, I took Adderall at the time, it stablized, yet i would still eat on the dose 7.5mg. That didnt help, yet I was put on Zyprexa to help with Adderall's mood changing effects (which are terrible). D-amphetaminew/Levo-amphetamine - that's the same as Benzedrine from the 1930's (Adderall's mixture, yet added with R-isomer stuff, crazy)
"constant" increase, need just use the medication's from the that where ok, in the past, some had known side effect's, yet they where known.
It does stablize life....tell you that! Doesnt stabilize the drive, you just "flout", and go with flow, no motivation, well in some cases.
Anyways, Wellbutrin? that doenst curb appitatite, yet it's an antidepressant that....eee...has some similar "cognitive" effect's, that can help, similar to psychostimulants. Yet, 450 is the Max, plus it is known to cause siezures (even at the FDA recommened, studied dose) in some. 300mg, I was taking to replace, Ritilin (cannot stand, vomit), went off, 2 years later, Adderall (works, just causes alot of mood changes, and irrtiblity, from the time I took it) It does improve social abilities, and mathematical thinking (logic),.....but Wellbutrin that was the worst thing ever!
take care

Well I'm on 60mg of Adderall now and I'm still eating a lot more. ugh. It's too bad too because Zyprexa is helping me out a lot.

Go ahead and satisfy the cravings. You don't need to fight them off. The catch is...you gotta feed them the right stuff...raw veggies, lots of them, fruits, more purified water, fewer or zero bread-based things (burgers in buns, pizzas, etc). Treat yourself to half of a candy bar per day.
Sounds hard I know. It is for a month or so. I know, I've done it and still do. The weird thing is, the cravings eventually go away and you actually prefer your new foods over the ones you used to crave. And, surprise surprise, you feel better all around too. There is a lot of science behind why this happens, but that is another story.
Feed the cravings good stuff.

You have to go as long as you can when hungry and then eat a little bit. Even though you will think you need to eat eat eat, you don't and then you wait a while and it will go away(the hunger). Only eating healthy foods like soup or a turky sandwich. These things are filling and help you keep the weight off. Also drink a lot of fluids, ones with little calories, like: coffee, diet soda, water, occasional juice if you are realy hungry. Juice is not that bad.
