Why isn't Savella approved as an AD?

Posted by lois on June 10, 2009, at 17:33:16

If Savella is a SNRI why isn't it being considered as being approved as an AD? I don't have fibromyalgia, but have muscle aches and skin sensitivity similar to Fibro and my doc is considering Savella. Since I don't have FM it would be off label and not covered by insurance.
Anybody else have these symptoms with their depression?

I believe it was purely political and economic. The company I think is highly aware of the treacherous dangerous market companies face when they sell antidepressants in the USA. They probably found it safer, cheaper, and less risky, to present the drug to the FDA as a FM med instead of an AD med.

From a marketing angle it was also rather smart, since there is hardly any competition in the FM market. The antidepressant market is flooded with competition.

That said, Savella is a potent antidepressant in 32 other countries. After USA doctors get wind of that, I'm sure there will be a significant off-label sales.

Well, new for the USA, yes for Fibromyalgia, and yes off-label for depression.

New for those of us who mailorder our own meds from overseas? No. It's been around a long time.

New in 32 other countries? No. It has been performing as a potent antidepressant all over the world for many years.

This is the one Phillipa, you will remember, that actually worked for me after ECT failed? The one that actually got me better instead of worse? The one that made it hard for me to go pee? The one called Milnacipran? You remember now. It's that one. Different name in USA though. Savella is Milnacipran.
