TOFRANIL EXPERIENCE

Posted by Cseagraves on April 26, 2009, at 13:54:37

Hi to all!

Pdoc just gave me prescription for Tofranil for panic/anxiety. Anyone here had any experience with this? Did it help? What were any good or bad experiences?

Does fatigue during day get better with time (like most meds)?

Thanks,

Courtney

I quit taking it a week ago after around 4 months during which I had a pretty lousy time. It made me really jittery and more depressed, and it felt like a really "dirty" drug (says the man who'll happily guzzle fluoxetine!). My mind felt kinda slow and I struggled to remember multisyllabic words when speaking or writing.

HOWEVER, I now realise my depression is probably atypical so it was just the wrong drug (or class of drug) for me. A lot of people swear by it, so don't be put off by my experience Courtney!

With regard to daytime fatigue, are you staggering the dose through the day or taking it all at night? Taking one dose before bed might help.

In terms of sedation I found it pretty mild. I could take 150mg at night and still be wide awake 5 hours later.

Worst side effects were postural hypotension (ie. feeling really dizzy and like I was going to pass out if I stood up too suddenly), and raging constipation (have some lactulose solution handy and take 10ml twice a day!). It took about a week to pee as well, and I had erectile dysfunction too.

Let me know how you find it. After reading up about imipramine I was quite taken with it and really wanted it to work for me, so it'll be some consolation if it helps you!

Oh, and another plus-side: if it DOESN'T work for you, I found it a lot easier and faster to withdraw from than SSRI's. You can drop 25mg every 3-4 days and get only relatively mild withdrawal effects.

Thanks sowhysosad.

I only took one dose last night of 25 mgs. Then I got on line today and read about all of the short and long term side effects. Don't think I want any part of that.

My next step is Nardil. Actually I wanted to try it but pdoc suggested to try Tofranil first. Seems Nardil is a lot less worrisome and will have better success with chronic anxiety.

Thanks for the info!

Courtney

I don't think Tofranil's any worse than any other med tbh Courtney. It's just that it's very common and has been in use for about 50 years, so you're bound to get more reports of adverse events.

The main SE's like postural hypotension, dry mouth and constipation you may well get on Nardil anyway, so it's much of a muchness.

That said, Nardil is supposedly more effective for really stubborn anxiety or depression...
