Return to Benzo Symptoms Years Out

Posted by Sit2Know on April 2, 2009, at 10:39:25

I am 19 years off benzos and all medications and I have gone back into the exact benzo withdrawal symptoms I had originally twice. The first time at 14 years for 6 months and now it is over two years and totally disabled. I am in contact with another man with a similar return to symptoms.

This is not anxiety and we have both been through every medical test known to man, it is benzo symptoms 100% and was brought on by minor stress and fatigue. Anyone know of anyone who has had this happen.

What were the original symtoms of benzo withdrawal. I'm not sure what you mean as thought the symtoms of withdrawal was back to anxiety? Thanks Phillipa

I was saying it IS NOT simply anxiety symptoms - here is what I have: DP/DR skin burnign stinging, extreme muscle pain, dizziness, neausea, internal shaking, dysphoria, - perceptual disturbances and distortions, sensitive to light- touch and sounds, insomnia, weakness, head sensations and probably 50 more

Have you ever tried to take an anticonvulsant to treat this latent BZD withdrawal syndrome?

Milnacipran or some other SNRI antidepressant?

I do hear what you're saying -- I'm not going to say one way or another whether it had something to do with benzodiazepines -- I still have muscle stiffness from dumping a huge load of benzodiazepines cold turkey 11+ years ago.

But -- the symptoms you describe, despite "a lot of tests" -- I went through a lot of tests, and I'm not denying the pain in finding the truth, still I have an 'orphan disorder' today.

What seems like benzodiazepine withdrawal could actually be something else rare.

A lot of those symptoms, not trying to compare completely to myself, I guess I am biased, but they sound rather like somatic conditions one would find in a somatoform related disorder.

Anxiety turned into bodily complaints for unknown reasons, and what is felt is VERY real, but without organic reasons. The most common one is pseudoseizures, seen a lot.

I'm just offering an alternate explanation because sometimes causality is not always causation.

And yes, under stressed conditions like now, my withdrawal complaints from years ago are also concurrent with my 'orphan disorder' and are stronger.

Jay

As a clinical psychologist I am well aware of somatoform disorders and I can assure these are neurological and consistent with GABA/Glutamate dysfunction.

The paresthesias alone are diagnostic for benzo damage. I am in touch with several people over 10 years off and still recovering from benzo use.

What do you feel will happen to me as took them for 37 years. Sometimes a mere .125xanax, sometimes more, sometimes none. I didn't have damage when on none. But what about now when my thyroid disease forced me literally to take more benzos? Love Phillipa

Psychologist -- not neurologist (just saying as you would know, its not good to self diagnose necessarily).

But I am impressed that you are managing illness despite that, a lot of kudos to you, really I do mean that.

Then you've had EEGs and MRIs and the like also ?

Fibromyalgia ?

I don't know... drawing straws.

I don't deny its a possibility -- I hope you get the care you wish.

This is tough to swallow, but honestly, go back on the meds , and work with your doctor to find the right combo that suits you best. Think of it this way. People with high blood pressure have to stay on their meds for life. I've been taking clonazepam, at the exact same small dose, for over 17 years. It works just as excellent as my first day on it, and I have stopped the stuff for often a month at a time with no problem whatsoever. Best wishes with your choice..
