How long for Zoloft to kick in?

Posted by tensor on March 31, 2009, at 5:23:33

Hi,

After being panic free for years the panic and anxiety have returned. I think it started a year ago when I started to take modafinil to help get up in the mornings and to cope with my work (energy, concentration). It doesn't matter if I stay off modafinil, the anxiety stays along with panic attacks. I also take 2-4mg clonazepam and 15mg Remeron. I have been on Zoloft (50mg) for twelve days and there's is no improvement, the first days I was much worse but now it's like before. I know they take time to work but is it like an avalanche effect or will it gradually start to work after a few weeks? I'm currently on sick leave until Monday, I wonder if I will be better till then.

Kind regards,
Mattias

I think it's different for everyone.

My response to Zoloft has been quick. After a few days, I felt extremely calm, almost stoned for a week or so. Then it evened out and I felt depression-free and happy.

I have been on Zoloft twice. The first time I relapsed, I started on 100mg. and it kicked in within a week. My last crash was several months ago, after I quit all meds for about 6 months. This was the first time I had been med free for over 12 years. It was great, I was cured! I through superior mind techniques and clean living defeated anxiety/depression... ah, well, no. The worst crash of my life. I started back on Zoloft, 150mg along with 600mg of lithium and 200mg of Seroquel. 50mg seems a bit low, maybe up the dose? Anyway, this time it took 4-5 weeks to kick in. I to was giving up on it. When it kicked in it was rapid again. I hope it works for you, I know how bad this disease can make you feel.

It is my underestanding that it can take months for SSRIs to have their full effect. Though I think you should have some sense of whether or not it's helping in several weeks. It must feel like an eternity given the way you are feeling.
I take 45mgs of Remeron at night for sleep. It really knocks me out BUT 2 pdocs have told me that I should titrate off of it because they believe it is inducing anxiety. I think it's worth exploring with your pdoc.
Have you ever tried Neurontin (gabapentin) for anxiety? I take modafinil every day but I take 300mgs of gabapentin with it to take the anxious edge of. You might think about trying Neurtonin for your anxiety. It works better than clonazepam for me.
Hope this helps.

I think I'm immune to ad's as 50mg felt like nothing to me. Do ad's work for everyone? 200mg is max I think for zoloft and Tensor it's been a long time. Love Phillipa

Yeah it's been a while, I have had the depression under control although there's always been a shortage of energy. Lately (the last year) the anxiety has grown inside me to a point I can no longer work. The 2-3 first days were horrible as I started at 50mg, no titration, then a few days that was quite good, I felt energized and started several project at home but that is gone now, perhaps I need to up the dose to 75 or 100mg. It's not difficult for me to reach orgasm which could indicate a too low dose. But it has only been two weeks, better perhaps wait one more week?

BTW, where's Meri-Tuuli nowadays?

Kind regards,
Mattias

It's the second time for me too, but last time I took it, it was for depression and I remember it took two weeks to start working, I remember I had a wonderful year of well-being before it pooped-out and I had a depressive episode that lasted seven months, but that is several years ago. Some people prefer Lexapro for panic disorder, so I guess that could be worth a try if this fails.

kind regards,
Mattias
